LATER, WHEN THE RAIN let up, Nann walked the slippery stairs to the ceremonial space. Looking down on it, even in the wan moonlight, it seemed a happy place. Large enough to accommodate hundreds of people, yet cozy with the shouldering oaks on the right, the swaying willows at the far end. As a girl, she had attended many Alban Hefin festivals, on the summer solstice, here, the time when the sun was at its strongest before the turning toward the dark time of year.

For most of her life, ceremonies and rites in this place were as normal as Independence Day or Memorial Day or Labor Day parties. Just a lot more fun. As a teenager, she wanted to bury anything that made her stand out, of course. At the same time, it made her sad that so many people would never experience the joy of a Wheel of the Year celebration.

Continuing down, she paused at the outdoor kitchen. Ten years. Ten years Candace Deadler had laid here, alone, no one knowing where she was. What was Nann even doing ten years ago? Not being asked to junior prom (which still stung)? Spring Break at Abraham Lincoln High (Go Railsplitters!)?

Nann looked up at the house. Ten years ago, Uncle Ed had already been gone a few years. It was Aunt Nancy’s last celebration before she went a little nutzo and had to be cared for by Nann and her mom. It was an enormous house—too big for a single woman to rattle around in? Would the solitude of it drive Nann to the same end?

She took it all in, moving in a circle, the wicker man with outstretched arms, the mighty oaks, the broad Wheel of the Year dance floor, back to the kitchen.

“Who were you, Candace Deadler?” She whispered aloud. “What were you? And who would want to kill you?”
