When she awoke the next day, the sun was streaming through the long, silky curtains draping across the window. She wished more than ever that she’d invested in light-blocking blinds, hating that all too soon she was being brought back to reality and being confronted, literally, with the light of a new day.

She’d hoped she would feel better today, but she felt even worse. The implications of what she had done, now able to be considered fully with the harsh glare of sobriety, sent her mind reeling.

Thinking about her standing coffee date with Mel, she considered cancelling, not sure if she could keep what had happened from her, but even more-so, not wanting to explain how catastrophically she had fucked up.

After making her coffee, trying to get lost in her morning ritual but unable to enjoy even the smallest of life’s pleasures after what she had done, she settled up on the sofa with Cujo, intent on spending some quality time with the only person in her life that didn’t seem to care how much she messed things up.

About an hour before their scheduled meeting time, she received a text from Mel. She’d opted not to cancel, but Mel had reached out, letting her know that she’d be stopping by Harper’s instead. She immediately figured that Mel knew something had happened, unsure of what Gemma had said after she’d left. Putting on clothes, she couldn’t even muster the desire to look good, throwing on an old college t-shirt that was well worn with age and pair of black stretch pants. She had finally showered in the morning, letting her hair dry and then putting it up into a messy bun, pieces sticking out in all directions.

She had managed to take her contacts out last night, the only real act of putting herself together being to take off her glasses and put them back in, a futile attempt to regain any sense of control and normalcy in her life.

Harper sat on the sofa once again after getting ready, feeling like a child who was about to be reprimanded for something they’d done wrong. And truly, she knew she had done something wrong and deserved anything Mel lobbed at her.

Waiting to hear her doorbell ring, she both hoped that it would happen soon and wished that Mel would get caught in traffic and never actually make it.

At their scheduled meeting time, the moment of truth finally came. It was strange that Mel was actually on time, but given the seriousness of this situation, she understood that it could warrant timeliness on Mel’s part.

She felt like she was crawling to the door. It took her a few moments
