Chapter Twelve

Brad

“We need to leave soon,” Elise says as she comes over to adjust my collar. “You should toss this shirt. It’s so worn out, the collar keeps curling up.”

“I’m not tossing it.” I walk over to the mirror. “It’s one of my favorite shirts.”

It’s a black polo shirt that’s old and faded and probably should be tossed, but I can’t bring myself to do it. I bought it the summer I lived in Oklahoma. The summer I worked at the pool. The summer I met Riley. She was with me when I picked it out.

Elise doesn’t know that. She doesn’t know about Riley. I don’t talk about her, but I still think about her. I think about her all the damn time. I try not to, but every little thing reminds me of her. Like yesterday, I went to get my hair cut and it reminded me of the first time I met Riley. I felt an attraction to her the moment I saw her. Then she smiled and I heard her voice, and that was it. I fell for her that fast. After our first date, I was hers. There was just something about her I’ve never been able to put into words, but I knew I’d never find someone like her again.

I’ve come to accept that, but I still can’t stop thinking about her. When I met Elise, I immediately loved her energy, her intelligence, her enthusiasm for life. She came along at a time when I needed that. I was halfway through my second year of med school, exhausted and tired of school, wondering if it was even worth it. I met Elise, who had already graduated and was doing her residency, and heard all her inspiring stories about working with patients, and that’s alI it took to get me back on track. She made me excited about medicine again.

Sometimes I wonder if people are put in our lives at the time when we need them the most. But if that’s the case, then why did I meet Riley? Why would I meet a girl I’d fall in love with, but couldn’t be with? I wasn’t looking to fall in love that summer, or even date. I was just there to make money and hang out with Nate. A girlfriend was the last thing I wanted, so why did it happen? Why did I meet her?

“Brad, hurry up,” Elise says as she goes to get her purse from the bed. “Why are you just standing there?”

I wake from my thoughts and see I’m still facing the mirror. I turn to Elise. “Guess I’m just tired.”

“Tired?” She laughs. “You’re on summer break. Just wait until you start your residency. Then you’ll know what tired feels like.”

Elise has a year left of her residency. Mine starts in the fall. I applied to places in the area, but ended up getting assigned to a hospital in Charleston, South Carolina. Since Elise’s residency is here in New York, we’ll be living apart next year.
