FORCE FIELD
Many decisions are an attempt to move from one situation (the current) to another (the desired future). By using the exercises in Lessons 9â11, we can identify factors that will help us get there (North Star/Strengths/Heritage), or hinder us (Weaknesses/Baggage/Threats).
But, as in Jenga, we may find that things are more fluid than that: making one move might free up what looked like a blockage, or create a new one. So, to see the whole as well as the parts, we need a framework that is more sophisticated and flexible than a simple âbalance sheetâ. Enter âForce Field Analysisâ.
Its originator, Kurt Lewin, was a pioneer in the field of Group Dynamics. He didnât see things in black and white terms, but always looked for nuances and hidden currents. His insight was that the status quo, or current situation, is the result of a combination of forces, some of which might helpfully push it towards a desired future, but aspects of which will constrain it or even push it to a less advantageous position.
If the âSWOTâ could be seen as less than an analysis, the Force Field is more, as it doesnât just help you to describe a situation, it enables you to see it differently, and to change it.
The sequence of questions is important. Defining the desired future state first creates a North Star. Visiting the future first also means that, in considering Question 2, you can see the current situation with fresh eyes, and maybe spot something that you would have missed if you were only trying to âescape the presentâ.
Questions 3 and 4 invite the decision-maker to see the elements influencing their situation not as static âfactorsâ, but as dynamic âforcesâ, which can be harnessed or mitigated in order to move the status quo towards the desired future. The fact that Question 5 focuses on specific forces, rather than the whole, allows you to notice how, by addressing one part of the challenge or opportunity, you might free up the situation, or unintentionally create new blockers â just like Jenga!
