Chapter Thirty
Dublin, Friday, 1:15 pm.
Thomas watched the lovebirds from the other side of the street. An amusing demonstration. Simon Hill slapping a piece of paper into Florence Lynch’s hand and storming off. The look of outrage on Ms. Lynch’s face. Thomas had a feeling this moment wouldn’t be documented on her Instagram feed.
Thomas had followed the target’s phone from the airport, arriving only a couple of minutes ago. He’d stood opposite the shop and watched as Simon and Florence ran into one another. It was great timing, and Thomas was glad he got to see it.
Both Simon and Florence were easily recognisable from the photos Thomas had found, though Thomas felt he wasn’t seeing them at their best today. Florence, in particular, looked dreadful, with her panda eyes and sunken cheeks. Thomas could catch all that from across the road. Up close, she must have looked even worse. Simon didn’t look an awful lot better. His skin looked grey, as if he’d been drained of blood.
Thomas stared at them through his shades. He understood. The two of them had suffered a rough night. He’d pieced it together from Florence’s confession, their text messages and Florence’s voicemail. Thomas had access to all that. He knew what was going on. More or less.
Simon had cheated on Florence, then dumped her when she made a stink about it. Or, if you believed Simon, he’d been innocently buying an engagement ring, and had been accused groundlessly. Then he’d dumped her. Thomas didn’t care which version was true. Probably neither of them.
Why were they even meeting? Thomas wondered about the jewellery shop. Was Simon returning the ring? They clearly hadn’t reconciled, despite Florence’s request to cancel the job. Her conscience was piping up a little too late. Or had a diamond ring changed her mind?
Anyway, cancel the job? Never. Thomas had told her the truth.
It wasn’t about the money.
