CHAPTER

ELEVEN

WE FOUND VARGAS, but he’s a bit banged up, the text message said.

I replied with, Can you talk now? Twenty seconds later, another message came through, Yes. I dialed Deidra’s number and waited while the phone rang. After the third ring, she answered.

“Hi Black, how’s it going?”

“That all depends.”

“What do you mean?”

“How’s Vargas?”

“Oh, he’s fine. Just a few cuts and bruises. He said Snyder and Long roughed him up a bit, and Ramos took the winnings from your last fight.”

“Is that all? He’s fortunate.”

“Yeah, I’d say he was, cause he mentioned when they arrived at your motel, Ramos told Long to take the car and get rid of him. You can take that to mean what you’d like but sounds like he wanted him dead. Fortunately, Long let Vargas go and we found him five miles west outside of Pleasanton. He also expressed his apologizes for telling them where you were staying. But like I told him, it was good for his cover. Bad guys don’t have a sense of loyalty.”

Deidra paused. I guess to give me an opportunity to interject, but I said nothing.

“Anyway,” she continued. “I’m not putting Vargas back in the field. Can’t risk it. So, no more Hector Corrales.”

“So, I’m on my own?”

“Yeah, for now, but I’m pulling you out, too.”

“I’m good with that.”

“It’s just too risky. We’re still working on locating Ramos’ house—any luck finding an address on your side?”

“Hold on,” I said as a thought occurred to me. “Yesterday you said you were able to pinpoint Vargas’ cell phone. Why can’t you do the same with mine?”

“We tried, but it didn’t work. Your phone is programmed differently than Vargas’. We should’ve checked before sending you out with it, but things were moving so fast.”

“Well, I guess there’s nothing we can do about that now.”

“Did you find an address or location for Ramos’ place?”

“About that… I’m now with Navarro.”

“What? How?”

“I was at Ramos’ house training, then he told me to leave with Navarro.”

“When? Why—you’re at his house?”

“This morning, because he wants me to fight for him, and yes.”

“Well, do you know where you are? Did you notice anything unusual about the place?”

“Still in Mexico. It’s very large, with maybe fifteen or twenty armed guards.”

Deidra sighed into the phone. “Okay, but did you notice any people there? Held against their will?”

“Hostages?”

“Yeah, I guess.”

“No, but I’ve only seen maybe half of this place.”

“Alright, just keep an eye out.”

“So, what about pulling me out?”

The line went silent. Deidra took in a breath, then slowly exhaled.

“The fight’s tomorrow night. Can you stay in just until the fight is over?”

“I’m not sure that’s a good idea. I’ve been trafficked, and who’s to say that won’t happen again? There may be another fight some scumbag wants me in.”

“You’ll be fine. We’ll find you before then.”

“I’m supposed to just take your word for it?”

Deidra scoffed. “What does that mean?”

“This operation is getting messy. I’m getting out the moment I have a chance.”

“Don’t forget the obstruction charges we have on you, Black.”

“I could not care less about those charges, and my patience is about to run out.
