Monica still felt a bit shaky as she rolled out dough for scones but she soon lost herself in the task and Visserâs visit retreated to the back of her mind.
She took the last batch of scones from the oven.
âIâm going to run these down to Nora,â she said to Kit as she reached for her jacket.
âToodle-loo then.â
Monica slung the basket over her arm and headed out.
She was pleased to see that business was still quite brisk when she arrived at the farm store. Nora was taking care of one customer while four others were waiting. Monica quickly arranged the scones in the display case and then jumped in to help.
âThanks,â Nora said, blowing a lock of hair off her forehead.
The last customers were gone except for a couple sitting at one of the café tables nursing their coffees and picking at the crumbs of their muffins.
âYouâve certainly been busy,â Monica said, eyeing the empty spots in the display case.
âYes. I think itâs the publicity from that poor girlâs murder. Everyone was asking me about it and they were quite disappointed that I wasnât able to share any gory details.â
Monica gathered her things together. âLooks like you can handle things on your own now. Iâm going to head back to start working on some cookies.â
âGood. Weâll need those this afternoon,â Nora said, tidying a display of cranberry jam.
Monica was on her way back to the farm kitchen when she noticed someone coming in the opposite direction. As he got closer, she realized it was Dan Polsky.

He put out an arm and stopped Monica. âIâm sorry if I seemed a bit surly the last time we talked. I realized afterward that Iâd been out of line.â He squeezed the bridge of his nose. âItâs just that there have been some things going on that have made me rather tense.â
âPlease, donât worry about it,â Monica said.
Dan gave a curt nod.
âSeveral people have told me that Betsy left Cranberry Cove after high school graduation and didnât come back in time to start her first semester of college. No one seems to know where she went. Do you?â
Monica was fairly convinced that Betsy had gone off to give birth to a baby but she was hoping to get confirmation. There was still a chance that something else had been going onârehab perhaps.
Danâs face closed down and he took a step away from Monica.
He shook his head. âNo. No, I donât.â
And with that he turned on his heel and stalked off.
That had touched a nerve, Monica thought. She also had the distinct impression that Dan knew exactly where Betsy had gone but didnât want to say.
And if Betsy had been pregnant, as the VanVelsen sisters had suggested, surely Dan knew about it. And
