The square was filled with people, all chattering away as they readied themselves for the night ahead.

"Why don't we have any early Christmas traditions in Scotland?" Macey lamented.

Luc chuckled. "You're a kelpie, you don't celebrate Christmas."

"If it means I get tasty food and presents, I'll celebrate anything," she countered.

He smiled again. "We'll get you tasty food and presents any day of the week, Macey, you know that."

"I do." She reached out and took his hand while looking around the crowds, searching for her other men.

The six of them were all spaced around the square, searching for any sign of Knecht Ruprecht. She was starting to have concerns that they wouldn't find him in time, especially with so many people about. They couldn't exactly attack the creature in front of all the humans here, they couldn't know about the existence of creatures like Macey and her men.

More time passed as each of them looked some more. Macey was starting to get frustrated about the whole thing. Why had Wolfgang sent her out to find the Knecht Ruprecht when the man wasn't even around yet? There was no reason for this. It was a waste of her time, her men's time, and...

A scream cut through the air and she exchanged a quick glance with Luc before setting off towards it. She didn't run fast enough to call any unnecessary attention to her, but not slow enough that she couldn't get to the person screaming before it was too late. Luc jogged along beside her and she had no doubts that her other men were on their way too.

She turned down a tiny alley, not at all surprised that this was where Knecht Ruprecht was making himself known. Out in the open of the square wouldn't have made any sense. Not when he would reveal himself to all. Then again, maybe the creature wouldn't care. None of the others had attacked humans, but there was always a first time for everything.

A woman lay on the floor, with a tall man leaning over her, a large stick pointed at her throat. Just like Wolfgang had said, Knecht Ruprecht was wearing a long cloak with a pointed hood. In his hands was a birch, stained with the dried blood of his previous victims.

"You are undeserving. You will be destroyed," the man growled.

"What? No," the woman blubbered, shaking and sobbing as she spoke.

"Step away from her," Macey shouted, stepping forward with her men fanning out behind her.

Knecht Ruprecht laughed deeply, the sound filling the air and filling her with dread. Even so, she stood still, knowing she couldn't let it get the best of her. She'd been scared so many times that she was well versed in standing her ground and not letting anything get to her. She was Macey, future Empress of Kelpies, and the Water Warden. One little Christmas tradition wasn't going to scare her.

Steeling her nerves, she stepped forward, hoping the creature would get the message and move away from the woman. They
