The self-healing return distribution: matched returns

I often hear presentations about the impact of negative returns on portfolios. If a portfolio drops by 20%, for example, it is pointed out that you have to earn a return of 25% or more in order to offset the loss. The implication, then, is that you should do whatever is necessary to avoid the initial 20% decline, because it is difficult to earn 25%. But it turns out the S&P 500 return distribution contains within it a matched positive return that more than offsets virtually every negative return.
