It seemed the electricity had only gone out in the back of the building, because as I hurried through the curtains leading out to the restrooms, the place was just as bright and loud as it had been before. Sure enough, Tristan and Dominic were waiting at the entrance of the hall, so certain I hadn’t run away.

Bastards.

Without a word, I strolled past and made my way across the dance floor, dining hall, and bar. I didn’t need to look behind me to know I had two additional shadows tailing me. Thankfully, no one spoke until we got outside, because if I had to focus on anything other than my thundering heart, I may have vomited.

I couldn’t do this.

I wasn’t Killian.

I couldn’t seduce people.

But looking out at the few stragglers milling about the parking lot, I didn’t find another option. It was either now or never.

Tristan began muttering about protocols and whatnot, none of which I could follow anyway, but Dominic was studying me a little too carefully.

“You alright, lass?”

My eyes fell down the length of his body. The sickly combination of horror and anticipation chilled me to the bone as I stopped, dragging my gaze back up to his face.

“I know you’re probably having an ‘existential moment of crisis,’” Dominic said softly, with surprising consideration. “But you’re in good hands here, I assure you. Anything you need to know—”

I didn’t let him finish. Charging over to him, I grabbed a fistful of his jacket and pulled him down to meet me, crushing my mouth against his. I could hear the breath catch in his throat, but any hesitation he may have had vanished in an instant, because his hands were suddenly on the back of my neck, only drawing me closer. He brushed his lips softly against mine, further taunting me as he pulled my bottom lip into his mouth. Even the briefest contact ate away the silence, making the clamor of distant voices and muffled music inside grow louder, to surround us as heat filled my veins.

The thrum of it all only further propelled us both, because my lips parted, inviting Dominic to deepen the kiss. Every passing second shoved away any exhaustion I had, leaving me lightheaded and euphoric as his tongue claimed my mouth. A small moan escaped, relishing in his perfect combination of bites and licks. And God help me, he tasted as good as he smelled.

“Thank you,” I whispered against his lips, grateful to find his eyes were closed.

After our little confrontation in the alleyway, I knew I couldn’t beat Dominic in a fair fight, but this was about survival. If playing dirty was my only out, I’d take it.

Before he could even gather his next breath, I slammed my heel down on his foot and hooked my ankle around the back of his calf. All it took was one good shove, and the Mage hit the ground. Tristan’s eyes were already locked on me, homing in instantly on the car keys I’d just lifted from Dominic’s jacket, now curled in my hand.
