6. How does being good make you happy? Goody-goody people who always obey the rules aren’t happy. They’re unintelligent and unimaginative and repressed.

Being good doesn’t mean being goody-goody. It means being morally intelligent, not stupid; morally imaginative, not unimaginative; and morally free, not bound. Being good is being real, being a “real woman” or a “real man”—being a mensch, to use a great, untranslatable Yiddish term.

It’s the wicked person who’s stupid. Like everyone else, he wants to be happy, but he doesn’t know that moral goodness is the way to be happy. He’s morally stupid, because he thinks he’ll be happier if he fills his pockets with stolen money than if he fills his soul with moral goodness. He thinks his pockets are more important than his soul.

And it’s the wicked person who’s morally unimaginative. A wicked person could never imagine great stories about moral good and evil in human life, as Shakespeare and Dickens and Tolstoy and Tolkien did. And it’s the wicked person who’s un-free. He’s addicted to his idols, his false gods and false goods, addicted to his money or pleasure or power, just as a drug addict is addicted to his drug. That’s the opposite of freedom.
