Chapter Eighteen

Olivia Heart

I wanted to kiss Dante for two reasons. One for the comfortable, warm clothing he brought me and for my phone which he had kept all this time—keeping my Aunt updated. Dante had pretended to be me for two weeks, sending her pictures of Luca’s pool alongside sweet messages and promises to call when I was less busy with work.

“You done?” he asked me after a small mouthful of porridge. It felt like thick, tasteless sludge in my mouth and the pain in my jaw smarted every time I chewed, but it was something.

“Yes,” I felt sick. I hadn’t eaten this much in such a long time that my stomach cramped, trying to remember how to work. Passing him the bowl, I suddenly felt grateful that he wasn’t going to push me to eat more.

“Dr. Evernight said in a few days you can try something with a little more flavor,” Dante smiled politely, ignoring the state of my wet hair that was on top of my head in a bird’s nest of a bun.

“If you’re ready that is,” Bones interjected loudly from his window seat. He knew my burst eardrum was making it difficult to hear and I appreciated the intent, even if it made me flinch.

In the safety of my room, back with the men I trusted, I waited for the feeling of relief to arrive. But instead, I remained on the precipice of panic and dread—just waiting for the rug to be pulled from under me.

After my shower, I was suddenly grateful for the exhaustion that weighed down on my consciousness, preventing destructive thoughts to my recovery and having to deal with Luca’s confessions.

There was a safety in hiding away, even for a little while. I have never been naïve when it came to my emotions. In time, when my body was strong enough to prop up, my mind I would have deal with what happened.

And I would survive it.

If only as a last fuck you to Adler.

“We have to go,” Chen had come in at some point. “The police are crawling over Adler’s hotel. I don’t feel comfortable with us being this close.”

“What are we supposed to do?” It was Bones who stood up from his seat, to stand by my side.

“We need to get out of the country,” Dante stood up, sending me a small smile. “Nothing can point back to Olivia.”

“It won’t,” Chen nodded, severe eyes cutting to me. “We made sure there wasn’t a single trace of her in the building or Adler’s personal things.”

“It won’t take a genius to work out he saw Olivia in Paris and then he had visited Italy,” Bones said. “And now she’s here in Scotland, the night after his hotel is burned down…”

“It’s not enough to question her,” Chen argued.

“It might be,” Dante reasoned. “If anyone knew she was in the country it could—”

“Get me out of here,” I threw off my covers. “Take me back to Italy.” My knees swayed from underneath me. Black spots coated my vision, but Bones was there to prop me up.
