Chapter Twenty-Six

Sydney

My head throbbed, the thumping sound loud and piercing in my ears. For each step I took, I stumbled forward, my own feet feeling foreign underneath me. It was like I was disconnected from myself, like I was floating outside of my body and looking down.

As I walked toward the Matthewses’ house, my vision blurred, making it difficult to see in front of me. I trudged along as best I could. My focus was on how I needed to find Sophia.

I’d searched the woods, but she was nowhere to be found. I assumed the only other place she’d go was home. I slapped the side of my head and shook it aggressively. I could feel my brain shake with my movements. I didn’t care. I was slowly unraveling, like a ball of yarn that had been pulled for too long.

The Matthewses’ house wasn’t our home. It was a pit stop. A place to lay our heads until they decided they didn’t want us anymore. I’d tried to open up, change, and have more confidence, but where did that get me? Murder. Hate. Bullies. There was no coming back from anything I’d done. I was too far gone. My time was almost up.

“Sophia?” I slowly opened the front door, my heart beating erratically in my chest. I had to find Sophia and apologize for how I’d treated her. I did need her. She was right all along. I was stupid to try to change and believe that people would see me as anything but scarred and broken. That’s all I’d ever be.

“Are you here?” I traveled through the house, looking in every room. My head still ached, duller and less blinding, but it was there, persistent and numbing.

I headed to the kitchen, and the front door opened and closed. The clicking sound of Mrs. Matthews’s high heels sounded on the hardwood floors.

“Listen, I know that fostering is a good deed. Why do you think I did it? She’s dangerous. She shattered all our mirrors. She carries around this lighter like it’s a part of her, and she thinks her damn sister is still alive!” I stumbled back and grabbed at the hanging pots and pans as I tumbled to the ground.

I thought my sister was still alive? She is alive. I saw her every day. We talked. Walked to class together. Ate dinner together.

“Sydney.” Mrs. Matthews’s face went white as she stared down at me sprawled out on the floor. “I’m going to have to call you back.” She placed her cell phone and purse on the table and bent down to help me up.

“Don’t touch me,” I whispered, my voice a low growl. I didn’t even recognize it. Harshness and anger laced through my words. Mrs. Matthews was lying. She had lied to me from the beginning. When she invited me into her home and said she’d wanted to help me. All. Lies.

My vision became hazy. As I heard her stand up, I clutched the metal pan in my hand that had fallen with me earlier.
