It was late. Daisy turned the corner onto her street, towards her tiny cottage on the outskirts of Riverhead, New York. Even though her neighborhood was less than twenty miles from Southampton geographically, it was light years away in every other regard. But the location worked well for Daisy, since it was halfway between her job and the university. After her aunt had moved from Long Island to Denver to live with her sister, Daisy had rented a small and very-basic glorified shack, but at least it was her own.

Daisy had been raised by her aunt after her mother died soon after Daisy was born. Her father had been having financial difficulties at the time, and taking on the responsibilities of a new baby had been too much for him. Even so, the conditions of the custody arrangement had been that she spend two weekends a month with her father and older brother.

She’d dreaded those weekends with every fiber of her being.

Which is why, when she saw who was sitting on her dilapidated front porch, she turned off her car and sat there for a minute.

“C’mon, Daisy!” yelled Liam. “I’ve been waiting here for hours!”

At least her father had been a contemplative, pathetic drunk with only occasional outbursts of violence. There was nothing contemplative or occasional about Liam. He punched first and thought about it later, if he thought about it at all. When he was able to keep a job, he worked as a roofer. Mostly, he boxed down at the boxing gym with a bunch of tattooed apes Daisy would cross the street to avoid talking to. His nights were spent guzzling whatever adult beverages he could mooch, buy or steal. And now this. He’d figured out where she lived.

It was times like these that her regrets overflowed and felt like they were bigger than she was. She wasn’t sure she could handle the next ten minutes. She wished her mother hadn’t died all those years ago. She wished she’d had protection, a soothing, tempering force in her life. She wished her father hadn’t been overwhelmed by grief to the point where it consumed him entirely. She wished she didn’t feel guilty that she’d been the cause of both her parents’ deaths, even though she’d told herself a million times that it couldn’t have been her fault.

She wished her brother wasn’t shaped by the collapse of a family.

And that he was a shitty human being regardless. Some people can overcome difficulties in their lives and rise to challenges because they have the strength of character to turn adversity into rocky roads that lead to better, more positive outcomes.

Liam wasn’t one of them.

She wished she could help him.

But she couldn’t help him. She’d tried talking to him, pleading with him, threatening him, hiding from him. Every attempt she’d made to lead her brother out of his twisted path of doom had failed.

Daisy had already made the decision that her own self-preservation was more important than trying again.

She was tempted to drive away.
