CHAPTER FOURTEEN
On Tuesday morning my kids and I arrived âon location,â as they say, bright and early, but it wasnât nearly as exciting as we expected. I couldnât even describe it as interesting. Sure, the backdrop was a gorgeous view of the lake and red cliffs. We saw some acting activity, along with cameras that were probably rolling, but it was so far away that we couldnât tell for sure,
We headed downhill toward the action on the beach, but we didnât get far. Yellow caution tape draped across metal stands kept most everyone a hundred feet or more from the actual acting. I could make out two or three actors with speaking parts in the scene and three others who were probably extras. They were surrounded by camera operators, sound-boom guys, and people holding up reflectors that looked like aluminum foil glued to cardboard.
Kai joined a few other high-school students who were milling around near the tape. Len started talking with one of the off-duty camera guys. At loose ends, I headed over to the tent.
This time, the brew I got out of the coffee urn was surprisingly good. Herman Buckmaster, dressed in sort of a white lab coat, was working in the tent with his whole crew, busily putting out breakfast foods and drinks. He and I ignored each other.
After a while, Kathy Roberson came into the tent. She surveyed the tempting variety of sweets on the buffet table before picking up a pitcher of ice water and pouring some into a tall plastic cup. Spotting me at the table, she walked over and said, âIs this more like you thought the movie business would look? All the activity outside, I mean?â
âA little bit,â I said. âWhat I could see from behind the yellow tape.â
âThis first few days weâll be doing minor scenes, mostly extras and small parts. Gives us a chance to warm up the crew, adjust the equipment and lighting, iron out a lot of things.â
âWhen do the real scenes start?â
âProbably early next week, or on the weekend.â
âYouâll shoot on the weekend?â
âUsually every day, but only as long as there is good light because weâre doing everything outdoors.â
âYouâre in luck,â I said. âThis time of year, thereâs plenty of light for at least fourteen hours.â
Kathy shook her head. âThereâs light, maybe, but not good light. The light will only be good this morning for a couple more hoursâafter that, itâll be way too bright and way too hot. We start as early as we can, shut down mid-day, and pick up again when it cools off.â
âOh? Where will⦠everyone be able to wait out the heat of the day?â Having a bunch of teenagers hanging out in someoneâs trailer for a few hours every day seemed like a terrible idea.
She sipped her cool water and said, âThe interns will go home after lunch. Their bus starts running tomorrow, and I think weâve sent out schedules so the parents will know the times.â She smiled suddenly, her eyes focused somewhere behind me.
