Sigrid and Allegra moved through the trees deeper into the valley. After running over the necessary hand signals for Allegra, two of them had remained silent, fanning out in different arcs, but always keeping each other in sight. Their goal was twofold: search for signs of other humans, and search for water.

The deeper they went into the forest, the thicker the trees became, blocking out most of the sky. To Allegra, that meant water. Whether it was below ground in a protected water table or on the surface, where they could get at it, remained to be seen.

Several kilometers away from the DropShip, Allegra first smelled it, then thought she heard it: running water. She signaled for a stop and then pointed at her nose—if there was a signal to smell the air, Allegra did not know it.

Sigrid frowned, and then understood as Allegra made a couple of exaggerated sniffing motions. Sigrid smiled as she also smelled the water and then asked the direction.

Allegra listened and scented the air again. Her best guess was the way they were already going. She signaled down and ahead, and suggested a direct march to the water because water also meant humans.

Sigrid agreed and took point. The two girls moved through the underbrush, using the trees as cover as they moved as fast and as quiet as they could towards the water.
