Eventually Cleve heard many sets of boots coming down his hallway.
âI know the way! No need to be shoving.â
That voiceâCleve had wondered if heâd be seeing Captain Mmzaza again.
âSo youâre the men protecting my king?â Cleve heard spit hit the stone. âMy grandmother was stronger than the three of you punies put together.â
Cleve expected to hear harsh words returned, perhaps even a punch to the Captainâs gut. However, the guards were silent.
Captain Mmzaza continued to insult them as Cleve heard a clank and then a key setting a lock. But still, the guards said nothing.
The boots came his way.
âCleve Polken?â one guard inquired. He nodded.
âCleve?â Captain Mmzaza said. âCleve, you in here, boy?â
The guards opened Cleveâs cell. âTurn around.â They fastened his hands together behind his back.
âCleve Polken. Donât think Iâd forget your name!â Mmzaza laughed. âWhat did you do to get back in here?â
Cleve saw the guards watching, waiting for his answer.
âI said some things that I shouldnât haveâ¦that were wrong.â
âAh, Iâve made that mistake all too many times. Will you be sailing back to Greenedge, me boy?â
âPerhaps at some point.â
âCaptain Mmzazaâs going to be stuck here for a while. If you need a good captain, you know where to find me.â
Cleve walked by his cell with the guards. âIâll keep that in mind.â
Mmzaza reached out to grab Cleveâs shoulder. Cleve feared the guards would jab Mmzazaâs arm, but surprisingly they made no motion toward their swords. Where was their eagerness to subdue defiance that theyâd shown when Cleve first came to Kyrro City?
âThe next time I see you, boy, it better not be in prison. You hear what Captain Mmzazaâs saying?â
Cleve was shocked. âI understand.â
âGood. Now Iâll inebriate myself.â He hummed as he reached into his sleeve and produced a flask.
The guards shoved Cleve forward. When they were far enough away, Cleve couldnât hold in his curiosity any longer.
âWhy were you so gentle with him?â he asked. They hadnât even taken away the old sea captainâs flask.
âThe manâs harmless. We have far worse enemies to fight than Mmzaza.â
So that was it. These men had gone with Reela and the others to Tenred. Theyâd seen battle recently and no longer hungered for it.
As they came out of the dungeon and into the light, it took some time for Cleveâs eyes to adjust. It wasnât until he was in the grand entrance hall that he could open his eyes fully. The colors of the castle were a pleasant change from the stark gray. Decorative banners and paintings adorned the walls and gave him a feeling of belonging.
This was Kyrroâs castle, not just the Kingâs. The castle had existed nearly as long as the territory itself. Much of its history had happened within these walls. The Krepps had even tried to take it, and theyâd failed. Cleve smiled as pride filled his chest. He was ready to fight, no matter what he had to say to Welson.
The guards didnât bring Cleve into a throne room. Instead, he was taken to a room heâd been in once before when heâd come with Rek and the rats.
