Chapter 19:
STEFFEN
Whenever Steffen awoke to find the glow of the sun peeking in through the bottom of his curtain, the first thing he wanted to do was open it to let in the light. But heâd made that mistake a few times already, once when a young woman was walking by outside and turned to find his naked self looking back. After that, he at least remembered to put on his underwear first.
He heard someone knocking at the front door and hurried to get the rest of his clothing on in case he needed to answer it. But someone got there first.
âIs Steffen here?â It was Marratriceâs voice. He waited before putting his shirt on to see whoâd answered the door.
âHe might still be sleeping. Who are you?â Effie asked, her voice more surprised than anything else, though Steffen didnât know why.
âTreece, a friend in his class.â
âOh, Marratrice?â Effie asked.
âYes, but only Steffen calls me that.â
Steffen was nearly done dressing by then.
âYouâre cute,â Effie said bluntly, as if it was a fact instead of a compliment.
Marratrice laughed bashfully as Steffen walked down the hall.
âStop, Iâm not,â Marratrice said. âBut look at you. Youâre so pretty! Youâre Effie, right?â
âMarratrice,â Steffen said, coming into the front room. Effie was giggling by then.
âSteffen,â she said, interrupting her laugh with a stern expression and fold of her arms. In a demanding tone, she added, âWhy have you been hiding that sheâs so cute?â
Embarrassment seemed to take control, starting three different sentences at once. âI wouldâveâ¦sheâsâ¦thereâs Gabbyâ¦â
He was relieved when Effie smiled and patted him on the shoulder. âIâm teasing.â She extended her hand to Marratrice. âItâs nice to meet you.â
âYou as well.â
Effie went to her room. Steffen figured she mustâve already had breakfast in the dining hall, unless she finally was sleeping in to a normal hour.
âI wanted to talk to you about a new potion Iâm working on,â Marratrice said. âWill you come eat with me?â
âSure.â
There was a knock at the door. Effie came out of her room to investigate as Steffen opened it.
When he found Jack Rose on the other side, at first it seemed strange. But then he remembered Terrenâs announcement about upcoming missions. A burst of excitement from his stomach seemed to propel his heart up into his throat so that he couldnât speak.
âHello, Steffen,â the master chemist said. He turned to Marratrice next. âHello, Treece, Iâve heard from Chemist Leandra that you have a knack for treating injuries.â
âThatâs kind of her to say,â Marratrice said.
âWell, Iâm sure itâs the truth.â Jack smiled politely before looking over. âSteffen, Iâd like you to come with me. Thereâs a lot we need to discuss.â
âAnother visitor for you, Steffen?â Effie seemed incredulous, though he often couldnât tell when she was joking. âWhen did you become so popular?â
âI donât knowâ¦â Steffen heard his voice trail off as he couldnât think of what else to say.
âThe Krepp has been staying here, right?â Jack asked, his tone excited. âI would very much like to meet him before we go to my house.
