Kari’s nervous energy prickled at my skin. After an afternoon of conversation and comfort, she’d retreated into her previous cocoon of fear as soon as we’d left her patient room.

Trust definitely did not come naturally. She seemed to anticipate the worst at every turn.

“You look beautiful,” I whispered into her ear, hoping to calm her a little as we entered an elevator from the underground tunnel. I’d taken her down here in hopes of keeping her warm as we traveled beneath the sector to a building roughly two blocks away from the hospital center. She wore a stunning blue silk dress with thin straps and a long skirt, leaving her arms exposed. I’d offered her my jacket, but she’d declined the offer with a slow shake of her head. I’d almost protested, but I’d suspected she’d needed the cool air to keep herself aware.

So I’d allowed it, instead wrapping my arm around her lower back and letting her feel my heat as we walked.

Now that we were in the elevator, she’d almost frozen from the terror overriding her form.

I crowded her against the wall, forcing her to look up at me. “I’m going to make you three promises,” I said, one of my palms caressing her cheek while my opposite fell to her hip. “First, I will remain next to you all night.” I drew a little circle against her hip bone as though to embed the vow into her skin.

She shivered in response, her pupils dilating.

“Second, I won’t let anyone touch you,” I continued, my voice dropping an octave. “Except me.”

Another circle.

Another shiver.

“And third,” I whispered, my lips finding her ear. “At the end of the night, I’ll hold you in my bed and purr for you while you sleep.”

“Y-your bed?”

“Yes.” I kissed the tender pulse point of her neck. “I’ll take you to my home after dinner, and we’ll see how you feel about building a nest there.”

“In your space,” she breathed.

“In our space,” I corrected her, my lips skimming her throat. “You’re mine, Kari. I might not be able to court you properly yet, but that hasn’t stopped my wolf from deciding. And one day soon, your wolf will pick me, too.” Technically, she’d already staked a claim with her little bite, but I didn’t want to push her. She was already fragile enough. This would take careful coaxing and a hell of a lot of healing.

Because I’d seen the X-rays this afternoon. I wasn’t a physician or a medical expert, but the wires in her abdomen painted a painful tale. Doctor Palmer had claimed that operating would be impossible. However, I didn’t believe in impossible tasks. After dinner, I would ask my father if the results had been sent to Ander yet. If anyone could help, it would be the Andorra Sector research team.

“Okay?” I asked, my thumb doing a third circle against her hip bone as I held her gaze. “Three promises sealed with a purr,” I murmured, giving her a slow rumble from my chest.
