Chapter Fifteen

The next few weeks, Janet kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. Something had to give. Alexei felt… not too good to be true, no. He wasn’t perfect. He had that dangerous air about him, he could sometimes be a little too controlling, he was overprotective, and there were cultural differences between a Russian and a Chinese-American that could be hilarious or annoying depending on the day.

But he just… fit her, so well. It felt like they were two puzzle pieces that had fallen into place, that had just been waiting for one another. It was not so much being blinded by love as looking at him and going oh, there you are. I’ve been waiting for you all along.

She liked to think that she fit him, too. There were times where he looked at her and it genuinely took her breath away, the expression on his face and in his eyes. Like he was gazing at the stars, at something wondrous and beautiful and breathtaking.

Janet had been admired for her dancing, especially since her debut as the black and white swans. She could understand why people would admire her skill in that even if the attention was a bit overwhelming at times (the day she learned that someone wanted to interview her for Vanity Fair, she’d almost thrown up with nerves). But for someone to look at her like she’d hung the moon? She didn’t even know where to start with that.

She could only hope that meant that he was in love with her the way that she was in love with him.

Sundays were her only days off. Her trainers insisted that she not do any dancing on that day and that she sleep in and avoid strong physical activities. Those were the days Alexei took her to the theatre, to the museums, to the park. Sometimes they would just sit in a library and read next to each other, or find a coffee shop and sit and talk for hours.

That day, though, Alexei seemed a little nervous. He kept glancing at her when he thought she wasn’t looking. They went to the outdoor ice skating rink that had just opened now that winter was here, and she knew—from previous conversations—that Alexei was a good ice skater. Practically had to be, he said, if he wanted to call himself Russian.

But he kept nearly tripping over his own feet and twice he almost ran into someone.

At last she grabbed him, tugging at his hands and pulling him off the rink. She could actually figure skate pretty well, since in some ways it was very similar to ballet, but today she’d just been gliding slowly around, avoiding strenuous activity like her trainers said.

“All right,” she told him. “What is it? What’s on your mind?”

Alexei stared at her with that breathless expression on his face, his blue eyes boring into her. “It’s just…”

He leaned in and kissed her passionately, his arms wrapping around her waist. Janet kissed him back, delighted and a little surprised but responding naturally at this point.
