That coffee had been the best he had ever tasted. Just having Ella there seemed to make everything better. They’d drank and talked until the evening sun began to disappear behind the building and Anthony offered to take her home. He didn’t want the magical day to end, to risk never seeing her face again.

But he took her home and left her at the door of her apartment with a tender kiss, wondering when he might see her again, if ever. He already longed to touch her skin again, feel the electricity of her closeness.

As he headed back to his car he was already thinking of how he could get her to agree to go out with him again.

As it turned out, that would not be difficult. They spent every day together for the next two weeks, having coffee, going for dinner, and even going to the movies. Anthony could not keep his hands off her and she seemed to feel the same way. There was a kiss here, a touch there, a little love-making in the car before they went out to dinner.

He sat in his office on a Thursday morning having no idea of the call that was coming. When his assistant buzzed Ella through he had no idea what was going to happen.

“Anthony, I need to see you now.” She spoke down the phone though he barely recognized her voice. She didn’t sound like the easy-going fun-loving girl he had met in ‘The Music Club’. She sounded harsh, almost scared as though something was wrong.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, feeling his heart stop. He was worried. She made him worried. He didn’t like that.

“Will you just come and meet me?” she sounded as though she was begging. Something really was wrong.

“I’ll come to your apartment.” Anthony told her, feeling even more worried.

“No need,” she replied and he could almost imagine her shaking her head on the other end of the phone, “I’m at the coffee shop down the street.” Anthony knew the one. It was the one he had taken her to after the first time they had made love in the studio.

“I’ll be there in five minutes.” He told her and with that he put the phone down. He grabbed his suit jacket off the back of his chair and rushed for the door.

“Sir, your next appointment is here.” His assistant called from her desk as he headed for the elevator.

“Cancel it!” he called over his shoulder without slowing his pace, “Cancel all my appointments for today.” Then he was in the elevator and there was nothing his assistant could do to stop him. He pushed the button for the ground floor, impatient to be on his way. The tone of Ella’s voice rung in his ears and he knew something was seriously wrong. He had never heard her sound so upset before.

When he arrived at the coffee shop he was hot and sweaty, panting from his fast walk, almost run. He glanced around the café and saw her sitting in a booth, the booth they had sat in on their first date.
