Early Bird Catches the Worm

With a Yeti mug steaming hot with Yogi Honey Lavender tea in one hand, the keys to the Be Well Body studio in the other, and her favorite Black Diamond Pursuit survival backpack on her shoulder, Devyonne was ready for another great day of providing restorative therapy for her tribe.

What she wasn’t prepared for was her newest client’s punctual arrival. Devyonne almost spilled the soothing lavender and chamomile elixir at the sight of Congresswoman Stella Landry’s long, shapely legs dripping out of the silver Tesla sedan. She glanced at her watch to confirm that she wasn’t late for their appointment, and quickly discovered that Stella was ahead of schedule.

Stella’s bright smile confirmed the congresswoman was pleased with herself. And the fashionable red suit and sleek black heels punctuated her victory. Even though the bumble bee had rubbed her the wrong way in the beginning, Devyonne couldn’t deny that she had taken inventory of Stella’s surface appeal.

“Surprise? Don’t even think of denying it, Dev. I can tell by the look on your pretty little face that you weren’t expecting Stella Landry to be on time for our date.”

Devyonne wanted to respond in a witty fashion similar or better than the congresswoman, but she was speechless by the unexpected ambush.

“You know what they say about the early bird, catching that slimy little worm. Gotcha! And we even brought breakfast. Didn’t we Jocelyn?”

Devyonne averted her eyes from Stella and focused her attention on the driver who was still looking fierce enough to take out any threat to her pampered politician. But her stoic disposition softened with a huge grin and raised hand containing a bag of Dunkin’ Donuts.

“Wow. Stella, you didn’t have to go to that much trouble.”

“Thank you? Where’s your manners Devyonne Rochelle Mitchell?”

“H-how?”

Stella giggled like the mischievous prankster that she was. Even Jocelyn had a sheepish grin.

“Oh shoot, Dev. I’m just teasing you. Truth be told, my earlier donuts and coffee thingy with the Girls Scouts was cancelled after a chicken pox outbreak with the troop. Since you were only 10 minutes away from the site, we decided to head on your way and bring you some goodies.”

It was way too early to process all that had happened in the past 15 minutes. Devyonne didn’t know if she should be appreciative for the secondhand gifts of Stella’s punctuality and donuts, or insulted by the after thought. She wasn’t even a Dunkin’ Donuts fan anyway, especially when the creaminess of the hot, moist Krispy Kreme’s melted in her mouth whenever she dared to indulge.

Okay, she really needed to get laid soon. Stella Landry was bringing out the worse in her.

“Thank you, Stella. Thanks for clearing up my confusion. For a second there, I thought I’d made a good impression on you. I guess it was easy to keep your promise and show up on time since you were in the neighborhood.”

Stella surveyed Devyonne’s face to assess her physical therapist’s temperament. Was the young woman pissed with her or simply teasing her.
