Chapter 7 - Xavier

It was the first time that Maisha had willingly let him touch her, and he still felt the phantom of her warm, tiny body in his arms hours later. He hadn’t wanted to let go of her, and he hadn’t until she stopped crying and fell asleep in his arms.

After that ordeal, he knew she needed rest. And he had a mess to clean up.

After bringing her back to the ship and confirming that the bastard William Fonte hadn’t raped his new wife, Xavier left Maisha in the care of a female slave to make sure she was cared for and cleaned up.

Meanwhile, he and Nikolas dealt with William.

Xavier had all but beaten the lecherous nobleman to a pulp, and if it weren’t for the resilient nature of vampires, he might have killed the asshole. Unfortunately, he had survived, and it was Xavier’s responsibility to report the incident to the local authorities. Being a prince of Rainada, he could have beaten any man or woman to death, and no one would have questioned him. The issue more was William himself and what he had tried to do to Xavier’s property—Maisha.

She was his. His wife. She belonged to him, and his rival had tried to violate her.

As much as Xavier had longed to be by Maisha’s side for the entire night, even after dealing with William, he didn’t return to her because he was embarrassed. It made him sick to his stomach that he hadn’t been there to keep William from getting to her so easily.

Hell, when stopping in this little port, he hadn’t even considered the possibility that William might be around to cause trouble. He’d been so caught up in Maisha and teaching her a lesson that he forgot about all the dangers hovering around them like werewolves on the prowl. William Fonte was just one of Xavier’s fierce competitors in the trade between Rainada and Daihalsa, and he would become an even bigger problem once Xavier became the ruler of the Seaside region.

Perhaps almost getting beaten to death would be enough warning to keep the man away for a few years, but he would hold a grudge.

In any case, Xavier was far more worried about Maisha than the worm who had attacked her.

Right on cue, however, he spotted Maisha coming up the stairs toward him on the ship’s upper deck. She wore a simple black gown, warm enough to stave off the chill against her fragile human body while still staying suitable for the unpredictable weather they found along the coast of Daihalsa.

A gust of wind struck her as she came to the top, and several strands of Maisha’s shimmering blonde hair flew out of her tight bun and curled around her face. She came up to the railing which overlooked the back of the ship, but she didn’t meet his eyes.

“How far are we from Rainada?” she asked.

“Two months with good weather and minimal stops,” Xavier said, watching her carefully. “Three otherwise. The coast between Rainada and Daihalsa is long, and we were rather far south when I found you.
