a) 11 Qxg7! was what White should have played in I.Rogers-I.Farago, Wijk aan Zee 1987. An interesting continuation is 11 ... Rg8 12 Qf6 (12 Qxh6?! dxc3 13 Bf4 is a worse version of the main line) 12 ... dxc3 13 Bxh6, reaching a critical variation for the evaluation of 10 ... cxd4. Black has two possibilities here:

a1) After 13 ... Qa4 I am still worried about the strength of White’s h-pawn. Black really needs to get a quick attack in. Let’s take a look at one possible line: 14 Bd3 (defending c2 and developing a piece) 14 ... d4 (14 ... Rxg2 15 Ne2 must be good for White too), and now 15 Bg7! contains a very clear plan: h6, h7 and h8Q. After 15 ... Nb4 16 h6 Nxc2+ 17 Ke2! Nxa1 18 h7 White is winning.

a2) 13 ... Nb4 14 Rc1 (14 Kd1 is rather risky as it allows Black to play 14 ... Nxc2! 15 Kxc2 Qa4+ 16 Kc1 Qb3 17 Rb1 Qxa3+ 18 Kc2 Qa2+ when Black has at least a draw and maybe more) 14 ... Qxa3 15 Bg5! (the knight on b4 is really needed back on c6) 15 ... Rxg5 16 Qxg5 Bd7 and again White’s h-pawn is going to be too strong.

b) However, 11 cxd4 should not be too worrying for Black: 11 ... Qa4 12 c3 Rg8 with an equal position. Black has enough counterplay on the queenside with ... Na5-b3/c4 to follow.

White must grab the material. Again the problem for Black is that the h-pawn will be far too strong in a number of positions.
