“That’s why we didn’t bother,” said his wife apologetically. “Maybe dark green.” She tapped her husband’s leg with the cane. “He didn’t have his glasses on. It was early.”

“I can see fine,” he said, shaking her off.

“Did you happen to notice the driver?” The old man bobbed his head yes; his wife shook hers no.

“He can’t see that far,” she insisted.

I left them squabbling, returned to my car, and drove up the hill. Had Meigs canvassed the neighbors around Annabelle’s house thoroughly? My doubts snowballed— it seemed to me that they’d accepted the easiest possible answer and called it a wrap. I collected the mail from her box, slid the key out from under her pansies, and unlocked the door. The wind was whistling off the marsh, causing Annabelle’s empty bird feeder to rattle. I could hear wind chimes clinking in the neighbor’s tree across the road.
