Benâs demeanor had taken me completely by surprise. In fact, all of them had not even considered that I might hurt Claire. Whether it was their new trust in me after Noelâs verdict, or just the simple fact that Claire had marked me and I was now the proud owner of a soul again, I couldnât tell. Anyhow, the lack of Benâs, and even Jadenâs, jumpiness around me had given my presence at the Gallager estate an entirely new quality. I felt at home.
We were sitting in the living room, all eyes on Claire, who had changed into a fresh shirt and was fumbling with her phone. The sun had long gone down and weâd been guessing what the new situation might mean for our odds against Volpert and his clan. Jaden was still on his trip to the Council, informing them about the new development and leaving us guessing.
âI know itâs late, but we really need to talk to you,â Claire muttered into the phone as Liz answered.
There was an exclamation and some grumbling on the other end of the line, that made me think we had woken Liz up.
âGive me a couple of minutes to get dressed, and Iâll be heading over shortly,â she eventually said, sounding half-asleep.
Claire looked around the table for a volunteer to teleport over to Lizâ. Jenna nodded.
âHold on. Jenna is coming to get you.â
âAlright.â
There were sounds of fabric, as Liz got dressed, and Claire hung up.
âIâll be back with her in a minute.â Jenna got to her feet and faded out of the room.
I looked up at Claire who was deep in thought, a crease on her forehead. Whatever was going on inside her mind couldnât be too pleasant.
âAre you okay, my love?â I reached out and squeezed her arm and she nodded in response. She didnât look okay, though.
Silently, I wondered if she was thinking the same thing I was. That Volpert would be lucky to get out alive if Claire and her angelic powers were on our side. But the shadow in her eyes told me she couldnât possibly be having such a hopeful thought. It must be a lot for her, finding out she had angelic blood and at the same time having to hide her enthusiasm, which I had clearly felt earlier today, in order to make her sister feel better.
As I was still wondering what was going on under Claireâs pale hair, Lizâ voice booked a hello.
âHi, Liz,â Claire jumped up to hug her, looking guilty as she did. âThanks so much for ditching your beauty sleep in order to help us.â
Beauty sleep is overrated, I thought and touched the circles under my eyes.
âWhatâs so important it couldnât wait until tomorrowââ The Latina pulled her shiny watch out from under her sleeve. ââor at least a couple more hours. Itâs two in the morning.â She was wearing surprisingly unstylish clothes and her raven hair was untamed. This woman must really take her duty to the angel-world seriously.
âNice to see you again.
