In the Village, the sibling rivals ten-year-old K and eight-year-old D find themselves strangers in a stranger place. In fourth grade at Sweet Valley High – not K is bullied and called an A-hole. He is beaten up most days, until he decides that flights are better than fights. Retreat is what his sister D does too; to combat her loneliness she manages to FADE OUT to the point of near-invisibility. Both become steadily more and more disillusioned with the move, and angry with their mom. In a detached house, latch-key-kid environment, with both parents at work or play, with no one else to be with and with an us-against-them familial empathy unknown previously, they begin to play together regularly as almost equals. The game they play most is called the ‘Sindy Game’. It starts one Saturday when K is parachuting the best one of his seven Action Men (the GI Joe bought in the US) out of the upstairs window … Target: D and her dolls and teddies. Now, K expects D to be cheesed off when a fully armed, vicious veteran of many wars lands in her game, but no, she simply goes over with a Sindy doll in hand, picks up the Action Man, and makes Sindy say, ‘My hero.’ After that, K’s magnificent seven battle-hardened, scarred-for-life Action Men are allowed into this society of D’s not once upon a time but anytime. In ‘anytime’ these desperate fighters are able to discover different sides to themselves. Explore strange new roles. Boldly go where no archetypal Action Man has been before. On hunter-gatherer adventures and in return for their protection, the Action Men become the friends of the teddies, the boyfriends of the dolls, and somehow the fathers of several bewilderingly enormous babies completely out of scale with the whole game who cry and cry and cry unless their Action Dada sits in their laps and tells them a bedtime story. This new tribal toy society gathers every Saturday for a couple of months. And both K and D enjoy pairing off the dolls with the Action Men. K especially enjoys himself, finding pleasure in fantasising about the relationships that are developing and in the sight of the naked dollies. After two months, however, the love affairs begin to fall apart. The GI Joe, who D calls ‘MacGyver’ because of his mullet, tries to get off with Swimsuit Sindy ‘because I’m in love with her big bumps’. When D refuses to let this happen because ‘MacGyver isn’t a nice person any more’, K takes Swimsuit Sindy and MacGyver and puts them into the Jeep Wrangler. ‘Don’t let him take her, K’ D yells, as MacGyver roars off into the bushes at the bottom of the garden. K says, ‘I won’t,’ but is powerless to stop MacGyver from stripping Sindy of her green swimsuit, throwing her onto the compost heap, duct-taping her wrists to her ankles, jumping on top of her and making the same ‘uh uh uh’
