The self-help industry has created a whole religion around the concept of communication. It’s everywhere, in the relationship section, the parent-child section, even in the new age section where spiritual gurus compelled me to communicate with the universe. Everybody wants to talk.

I sit against the counter, saying nothing. Rex fades into the wolf, or the wolf into him, both of them sharing the moment if his dual eyes are to be my Rex-o-meter.

There’s nothing to talk about here, so I just sit, just pull at the plush rug threads with my toes. Some things can’t be solved with communication, some things are just left broken, and it’s up to me to decide whether I can live with it or not.

I’m aching for the easy way out. I want Sweetie and Rex to simply overcome Edith’s power because they love me and refuse to hurt me. I want Sweetie the beast to share with Rex the human, or maybe to separate and be a new thing I can love without guilt.

Black and white, that’s what I crave. Instead, I have something that’s almost Rex, but completely different. An entity to constantly supply reminder and remorse for the friend I’ve mostly lost.

And Edith…

Her and I will go at it alone.

Actually, I’m okay with that. I just would have liked Sweetie to solve the problem more efficiently. Would be best for both of us. But I can take her on. I have to be smart.

Behind my shoulder, the ghoul-eyed boy in the mirror whispers a line from the text of Alchemy.

It’s not enough to act as though your requests have manifested. You have to believe it.

Yeah, there the kicker. Edith believes I’m her daughter. I believe I’m doomed.

I’ve already proven that I can be more stress than I’m worth to my parents. I can undo her as I did them, test her belief by being a giant pain in the ass. But what will she make him do to me?

Sweetie waits for me for the longest time.

He’s back to his cutest form, dual eyes and ears up top, pretty ink along the sides of his face, tendrils coiling off the tips of his hair.

His dirty hair. We need that bath. Then a noise in the background becomes all too prominent, reminding me…

“Bath tub!” I squawk.

The brooding spell breaks. Rex turns and switches off the water. The deep porcelain tub is full to the lip, hot water steaming.

A boiling pot, the boy in the mirror whispers. He’s always got something to say, every second I accidentally look at him. So I don’t. People can go crazy looking at mirrors.
