CHAPTER 12

Niur had to step on dead Lilri soldiers to get out of the little medical treatment room.

Richmond had turned out to be right. Niur had to use both arms to carry the machine. He couldn’t hold a weapon.

Richmond collected all the soldiers’ rifles. He took a few extra minutes to tear up his old, ruined shirt into strips.

He made straps for the rifles so he could carry them over his shoulder. He could carry more of them like this.

Niur frowned at him and the rifles. “Good thinking, Captain. I wonder why no one on Narillia thought of that before.”

“Everyone does it this way in the Chronon Vanguard. The strap is an essential piece of equipment used for carrying the weapon and for bracing it when you fire.”

Niur wouldn’t stop furrowing his brow in thought, but he had to pay attention when the two men left the medical treatment room.

Richmond shut the door with the dead bodies packed inside. He went in front on the way back to the holding cells. He kept his rifle at his shoulder and swept it into every side room, hallway, and window he came to.

The friends didn’t see anyone all the way back to the holding cells. The whole level appeared to be silent and deserted. The hallway between the cells was empty too. No soldiers stood guard.

Niur couldn’t put the machine down to take the keys out of his pocket, so Richmond did it for him.

He also didn’t let himself think about which of the three friends might be the most critical, so he unlocked Uril’s cell first. He was barely alive. Richmond let Niur in and then went to unlock the other three cells while Niur used the machine on Uril.

“Why can’t we just get the hell out of here, sir?” Leatherwood whispered. “We have the keys. You have weapons. We should just scoot as soon as Niur finishes treating everyone.”

“We won’t be able to,” Niur called across the hall. “All the wounded will be too weak to even fly in the Necrodrome tomorrow night. They won’t be able to function well enough to go with us if we escaped. We’d have no choice but to leave them behind.” He turned back to Uril. “Look. He didn’t regain consciousness when his wounds healed. He’ll sleep for a long time before he’s ready to do anything.”

That ended the conversation. Richmond would have liked to help Niur, but this was a one-person job.

Niur entered Jolok’s and Fadek’s cell next. Fadek didn’t regain consciousness either—and neither did Tiron.

“Will he recover, Niur?” Zuna asked in a tiny voice. “Will he be okay?”

“He’ll be fine as long as the Lilri let him rest long enough to recover from his injuries—which is debatable. His injuries were severe. Just don’t disturb him tonight. Let him sleep.”

She didn’t ask any more questions. Niur went into Hayes’ and Leatherwood’s cells and treated their injuries, too.

Richmond went around locking all the prisoners in behind him. “You all remember what Niur said. Pretend to be asleep if you can.
