Alexander gives Calico a gift.

He looked out of the window—it faced the lawn behind the mansion, cut off from the flurry of people out front. The sky had darkened to cobalt and the snowfall had lessened to a steady flutter, drifting through the fingers of barren tree branches onto the white-covered ground.

In the distance, obscured in the penumbra of the lawn lamps, Archie saw Calico climbing onto his horse. Alexander was standing by, wearing a thick winter coat. Its fur-lined hood fell away behind his head as Alexander stepped forward and gave Calico a medium-sized bag.

Archie saw a smile flicker across Calico’s face as he took it. Snow drifted down and settled in Alexander’s hair. Then Calico nudged his horse and trotted away into the shadowy darkness. Alexander stood there for a moment before he turned and walked back towards the mansion.

Archie rejoined the guests in the main entrance hall, and a few minutes later he saw Alexander slipping inside without the winter coat. As always, his brother looked dapper in his silk-lapelled tailcoat, low-cut white waistcoat, wing collar and white bow tie; he walked right past their grandma without stopping when she complained loudly that he had snowflakes in his hair.
