Next, Elsa walked over to the ice engine. There were only six round blocks that Kristoff could see. They were stacked in a row in front of the cart.

Kristoff looked triumphant.

Then Oaken led his cart forward a few paces, revealing what looked like a wall of ice! The cylinders were stacked on top of one another. There were twenty-two in all!

Elsa stepped forward to make the announcement. “The winner is Oaken!” she said. The villagers and the ice harvesters cheered.

Kristoff’s face fell. Oaken’s machine had won fair and square. Anna and Elsa walked over to him.

“You should be proud, Kristoff,” Elsa said. “Look what you’ve accomplished.”

“Yeah,” said Anna. “Cutting two blocks at a time! That was incredible.”

“Thanks, you two,” he said.

Just then, Olaf emerged from the crowd. He bounded up to Kristoff. “Cold hug?” he offered.

Kristoff looked at him and smiled. “Actually, I’ll take a warm one, if that’s okay,” he said, and Olaf hugged him enthusiastically.

Once he had finished hugging Olaf, Kristoff approached Oaken.

“Good job, Oaken,” Kristoff said, extending his hand to shake. “I guess maybe a machine can be a substitute for a real, live ice harvester.”

Oaken shook his head. “My engine is fast, ja? It has a lot of parts. It even has a little mouse,” he said, petting Lars gently. “But the one thing it does not have is heart.” Oaken clapped Kristoff lightly on the shoulder. “I’m hoping we can work together, ja? The ice harvesters and the engine.”
