Challenging all forms of the desire-based account of the harm of death is this example. A human baby is born in good health with loving parents who are fully prepared to care for her. At one week old, she is indisputably sentient and has the potential to develop the advanced cognitive life of a normal human being. As of now, however, she has no plans or projects, much less the concept of life. Suppose that, by some freak accident, the baby dies painlessly in her sleep. Desire-based accounts must judge that she is not thereby harmed. Yet, upon hearing such a story, many of us would consider it a tragedy – not just for the grief-stricken family members, but for the baby herself. The judgement that death harms the baby requires an alternative account of the harm of death.
