Barney and Rip

Two troublesome dogs

To take on a trip.

I said we were off

For a nice quiet ride

And I settled them into

The back, side by side.

They were both very big

(St. Bernards often are)

And there wasn’t much room

Left for me in the car.

We had barely begun

Some ten metres or more

When Barney and Rip

Started in to explore.

And Rip, who was smaller

Decided to squeeze

In the space that was made

For the passenger’s knees.

And Barney jumped into

The front seat and put

His face in the place

That was made for my foot.

So I just stopped the car

And I opened the door

And I said, “Go on home

This has happened before.”

“I’ve tried more than once

For a ride to the wood

But you troublesome dogs

Don’t know how to be good.”

But then Rip wriggled out

And sat back in his place

And Barney in turn

Hung his head in disgrace.

“Well,” I said.

“We will see

If you really will try,

Then we’ll go to the woods

And come back by-and-by.”

What a time we three had

Rip and Barney and I

As they ran through the woods

I hurled sticks at the sky!

At the end of an hour

We got back in the car

And drove happily home

And it wasn’t too far.
