The plane was from the 1970s, just like Shaggy’s wardrobe. The nickname was apropos. Shaggy was tall and gangly with reddish hair and a scrawny goatee. He had on jeans and a t-shirt with a stained baseball cap and silver-framed aviator sunglasses. It looked like the sunglasses were the only thing that he took care of. Whatever Scooby-Doo fan had given him the nickname should have been applauded. It was perfect.

My only hope was that he took care of the plane as well as he did his sunglasses. Sometimes drug addicts hold onto one thing they truly care about. That’s sacrosanct. For both my sake and Jenny’s, I hoped for Shaggy it was his aircraft.

After a quick introduction and exchange of cash, he guided us out to the plane. It was in decent shape.

Jenny sat warily in the back and I was in the front passenger seat, a camera in my lap.

“Is this going to get me killed?” Shaggy asked again. He’d already asked me twice.

“What will get you killed is not doing it,” I answered, for the second time.

We took off from the airstrip, the only plane that seemed to be operational at the moment. It was a tiny airport near Wellington, home of even more suburban sprawl and lots of horse ranches. It was a place that widened out from the Everglades and still held large parcels of undeveloped real estate. That wouldn’t be the case in another decade, considering the way south Florida was growing.

Shaggy took the plane north, beyond West Palm and then we circled down, parallel to the coast, until we passed over Miami and Biscayne Bay. When the first chunks of the Florida Keys came into view, I readied my camera.

I’d already given Shaggy the rough GPS coordinates for Spring’s compound, and within minutes, we were overhead. I pointed the camera with its large lens down and began firing off rapid exposures. I didn’t pay too much attention to what I was seeing, knowing that we would study the images in great detail later tonight.

Without turning to check, I knew Jenny was studying the ground with great intensity, looking for her daughter. Through the camera’s eye, I didn’t see her.

Once we were past, I told Shaggy to turn around and go back home the same way, which would give me another look at the place.

On the return trip, I didn’t see anything different.

Except for one thing.

A guy sitting on top of a Jeep with a rifle over his shoulder and a phone in his hand.

His hand was raised, pointing the back of the phone at the plane.

Taking a photo.
