I feel pretty good about drawing the Three of Cups—the card of happiness, celebration, and gatherings. Funny, but what that one card tells me is that working with the Ancestors of Place will open me up to being more social, going to more events, teaching more, and going places with more people. What I'm also hearing is that working with this bunch of ancestors is going to prompt me to get out and have some fun. Ha! Does the Three of Cups realize it's talking to a Hierophant?

What if your one-card draw were the Tower or the Nine of Swords? What does this tell you? Is it scary to think about making this connection or does it pique your curiosity? I don't know which card you drew, but I'd really be interested in hearing about it. (Let me know at mailto:[email protected].)

Ancestors of Place are part of your family's genetic and cultural roots. They are the keepers of your ancestral practices as they relate to a specific site. They can help you discover the rituals, everyday practices, traditions, and even how they worked with their ancestors.

And in a sneaky way, those ancestral practices may have already popped up in your life. While you may think that the special entrée your mom served at Christmas was just something she found in a recipe book, the truth is it's one that your Ancestors of Place would have known well. Sadly, where it originated is lost in time. But why, you have to ask yourself, was your mom drawn to that particular recipe?

I know your family may or may not have passed down stories from many generations ago, but I promise that something in your life that you take for granted came to you from Ancestors of Place. It may be a color you're drawn to, food you like, a predisposition to being an incredible swimmer, or your attraction to mountain climbing.

Personally, I blame a few tiny specks of DNA for my love of pizza and Mexican food. Oh, that it were so . . . .

Whether your genetic home is the Great Steppe of Central Asia or the mountains of Snowdonia in northwestern Wales, you are connected to those ancestors. These are ones with whom you can work to learn how to honor the land where they were born and where their bones rest. Connect with these ancestors and you'll be connecting with your own cultural and genetic heritage.

Will you be proud of all your Ancestors of Place? No. In fact, some of them could be the progenitors of some pretty nasty family patterns. In my own work, however, I've found this to be rare. I think you will too.

One thing that's a little tricky, though, is that Ancestors of Place can be so merged with the Spirits of the Land that it's hard to separate the two. You'll find a spread for that in this chapter as well.
