By the time I climb the stairs to the apartment, my toes have thawed and my shoulders have started to ache from carrying too much tension.

The side entrance is quiet. The door chime jingles when I come in, bright and soft. The apartment smells like cocoa, laundry, and Liam—rice and kumquat, layered deep into the nest we built.

The sound of something crinkling comes from the living room.

Liam sits cross-legged on the couch, a folded blanket under him, a small pile of tiny white onesies in his lap. He’s wearing my green sweatshirt; the sleeves are rolled up now, exposing his wrists. His hair is damp from a recent shower, curling at the ends. His bump rests against his thighs, prominent under the soft fabric.

He looks up when he hears the chime. His face brightens for half a second, then changes when he sees my expression.

“What happened?” he asks immediately. “You smell like someone tried to sell you a timeshare in hell.”

Despite everything, a laugh bubbles up. It comes out more like a huff, but it’s something.

“You’re not wrong,” I say, hanging my jacket on the hook. “Cole’s been to the diner.”

His hands tighten on the little onesie. “What did he do?” he asks. “Did he—did he ask about me? Did you see him at the house?”

“He stayed near the Hearthlight,” I say, moving closer. “Sat at the counter, tried to run the ‘concerned pack representative’ script. I cut him off at the legal section.”

I sit in the armchair across from the couch, close enough that our knees are almost touching. His scent curls around me, tense and sharp at the edges.

I walk him through it. The diner. The statutes. The way Cole tried to frame it as “bringing back a wayward omega.” I don’t edit, but I keep my voice steady.

“He implied Greyson will keep trying,” I finish. “That he’s... patient. That ‘alphas don’t let their omegas slip away.’”

Liam’s face goes pale. His scent pulls in, then spikes sour with guilt.

“This is my fault,” he says.

“No,” I say immediately. “It’s his.”

“I brought this here,” he insists, eyes too bright. “To Hollyridge. To you. To Nora. To Ruthie and the Temples and everyone who’s just trying to live their lives. He wouldn’t be sniffing around in the middle of a blizzard if I’d stayed in the city and... and dealt with it there like I was supposed to.”

“Like you were supposed to?” I repeat, incredulous. “Liam, he was hurting you.”

His jaw works. “He said he was ‘correcting’ me,” he says softly. “Helping me ‘adapt.’ Making sure I made ‘smart choices’ for the pack. I thought if I just... did better, he wouldn’t have to do that. If I’d done better, maybe—”

“Hey.” I lean forward, elbows on my knees, until I’m in his line of sight. “Look at me.”

Reluctantly, he does.

“This part is important,” I say. “Write it down if you have to. Say it with me if it helps. His choices were not your fault. His violence was not your fault.
