Chapter Twelve

I sit at the kitchen table staring into a cup of black coffee. I’ve been staring so long that the steam has gone, and the ceramic has long since gone cool in my fingers.

“You doing okay?”

Isla’s voice draws me out of my nowhere land. I blink and lift my head, turning to look up at her.

“What?”

“Eventually you’re going to stare a hole right through the bottom of that cup.”

I sigh and set it down on the table, dropping my hands into my lap. “Have you heard from him? Is there any word at all?”

It’s been days since Roman took off from the strip club, and I’m going out of my mind.

I don’t like Roman being gone, and I like even less the way things ended between us the last time we spoke. If something happens to him … if something already has … I hate to think the last words I spoke to him were in anger.

I hate to think that the last thing he felt from me was my disappointment in how he’s treated his pack. Who am I to judge, after all? I’ve never had a shred of responsibility for anyone other than myself my whole life? Who’s to say what I would do if faced with the same decisions?

But none of those thoughts will bring Roman back.

Only he can do that.

Especially not without the hunters.

I glance up at Isla expectantly for a moment. “And the hunters, anything from them?”

Isla shakes her head. “No, sorry. Nothing yet.”

In the time since Roman left, Isla has been kind enough to fill me in a little more on these “hunters.” I’d gathered enough before from their broken conversations that they were some kind of guardians of the pack, sworn to protect it with a lifelong oath.

But what I didn’t know at the time is that these hunters often hold peerage type roles—especially in a pack the size of Roman’s. Or not-Roman’s, since he refuses to claim it.

These hunters rule in their own right, settling small disputes in towns outside of Nashville. Problems deemed too small for the alpha to be responsible. But without an alpha on the throne to reign them in, many of them have fallen out of contact with Isla and the pack.

Even more have disappeared altogether—leaving the pack without leaders, without judges, and most importantly … without protection.

I let out a frustrated sigh and lean onto my elbows planted on the table.

“I wish Roman had questioned Ruse more. We might have heard something that could help us know where he’s gone to and what he’s doing.”

Isla glances at me with a confused look on her face, so I hastily add, “About Roman, I mean. I don’t care what happens to Ruse.”

I wrinkle up my nose as the thought of the incubus surfaces in my mind, then just as quickly bat it away to return my thoughts to my missing mate. “I’m so worried about Roman. Plus, we saw that pack member of Rylan’s right when he left, and I can’t stop wondering if they got him and something’s happened to him.
