A Week Later
"So?"
Sarah looked up from the book in her lap at Beth. "So?" she returned the vague question. "Oh no, what's ticking in your brain?" Sarah inquired.
"There's nothing that says that couldn't be us," Beth replied. Sarah's brow wrinkled in confusion and Beth sighed. "Brie," she said. "I saw the look in your eyes when you held her," Beth explained.
"What look was that?"
"Do you want that?" Beth asked.
"Want what?" Sarah wondered.
"A family," Beth answered.
Sarah's heart dropped so rapidly in her chest she thought she might lose consciousness.
"Sarah?" Beth called with concern.
"You mean kids?" Sarah tried to clarify.
"Do you?"
"Do you?" Sarah returned the question in kind. Beth's face tightened measurably, and Sarah sighed. "Is that what you want, Beth?" Sarah asked gently.
Beth hesitated to answer. She wasn’t certain what she saw brewing in Sarah’s eyes—a storm of some kind. It left a pit in her stomach. “I love kids.”
“I love kids too,” Sarah replied.
“But?”
“Beth, I never thought about having children. I mean, we’ve never talked about that.”
“Maybe we should.”
Sarah nodded. “I think the fact that you want to talk about it tells me everything I need to know.”
“And, that response tells me we are not on the same page at all.”
Sarah wasn’t sure what to say. Kids? There were days when Sarah was positive she resembled a petulant twelve-year-old. “You would want to do that with me?” Sarah questioned.
“Why wouldn’t I want to have children with you?” Beth asked. “I think we could offer a child a great deal, don’t you?”
“You mean stability and opportunity,” Sarah surmised.
“Actually, I meant love.”
Sarah scratched her brow. “Seeing Brie gave you the bug.”
“The bug?”
“The baby bug,” Sarah said.
“You think that I am raising this just because Kat and Neil had a baby?” Beth bit.
“I didn’t say that.”
“What are you saying, Sarah?”
“I’m just wondering where this is coming from.”
“We’ve been together for five years. I’m not sure why it would surprise you that I want to discuss our future.”
“And, you would like our future to include a family.”
Beth nodded. “I would, but it’s hardly my decision.”
Sarah found herself at a loss. She had never considered having children. She and Beth had created what Sarah had thought was a comfortable and meaningful life together. She knew that Beth loved children. Until now, they had both been focused on building their careers.
“I know you love kids,” Sarah commented.
“So, do you.”
“I do, but I never thought I’d have any.”
“Why not?”
Sarah shrugged. Why haven’t I?
Beth sat down beside Sarah and took her hand. “Sarah? Talk to me.”
“I’m not sure what to say.”
“How about telling me how you feel.”
“You mean about having children?” Sarah took a deep breath. “I’m not sure that’s what I want.”
“What do you want?”
That’s an excellent question. “I like our life the way it is.”
“You like our life?”
“Don’t you?”
Beth held Sarah’s hands in hers. “Yes, I like our life. I love you, Sarah. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t give you or want to do with you. I thought you knew that.”
Sarah squeezed Beth’s hands. “I love you too.
