CHAPTER 29

TROY

Troy helped the two men transfer the body wrapped in a black satin sheet from the rental van to the trunk of his friend’s car. Troy then threw a black garbage bag into the back seat.

“We’ll leave the van here,” the friend said. “I reported it stolen, just before you got here.”

“Good. I have to be back in Tampa by tomorrow morning. Will that be a problem?”

“Nah. Everglades aren’t that far. You can sleep while I drive. We appreciate you helping us out.” Both men got in the car, Troy in the passenger seat. “Once we get to the ‘glades, Red can take it from there. He owes you.”

“Yeah, well, after this, debt’s paid. Then I’m done.”

“That so?”

“Chessa’s dead. Got the call before I met up with you guys in Orlando.”

“You been with us all evenin’ and ain’t said a word? Ah, man. Real sorry to hear that, Troy. She still married to that scum?”

“Till death do you part. You could say my sister just got her divorce.” Troy shook his head. “Can’t do this anymore. I promised her.”

His friend gestured toward the trunk. “That’ll be your swan song, then. We won’t call you no more.”

“Works for me. I brought a change of clean clothes in the bag. I’ll throw these dirty ones in there. Do me a solid? Have Red get rid of them too.”

“Out of all us guys, you’re the smart one, Troy. Always planning ahead. Just hope you’re smart enough to hold to this swan song, you know what I mean? It gets in the blood, like a disease, you know, like syphilis or something, where it destroys you from the inside out. We’re gonna miss you on the team. That new opportunity? Looks mighty sweet from where I’m sitting. Mighty sweet.”

Mighty sweet? If Troy got another chance to be with Everlee, he’d gobble on her like Santa on cookies. He could still smell roses after a storm with a hint of raspberries and flesh. He’d arrived at the office primed, ready to go. Too bad Brooke was the only one there, all too willing. Too needy. The other day in the bathroom, he’d almost entered her, until she said how Troy was hers now and Everlee could pick another ex-con from the bunch.

Ex-con, that’s what she had called him. Then he’d deflated and they were done.

The relief in his hands around her neck would have been as good as sex.

Almost.

But he wouldn’t allow himself the satisfaction. At least Brooke’s little girl Kiley had a chance now at a good life with parents who loved her. Unless Justin repeated the same mistake picking women. Some men…

“Did Twyla pick up the package I called her about?” Troy asked.

“Far as I know. Took the package to the airport and dropped it off.”

“I’ll call Twyla and tell her thanks. But don’t give me any more information. Got it?”

How pissed would Everlee be now? All that trouble of hiring and training a new receptionist in the middle of her scholarship interviews and awards thing.
