Chapter Eleven

Ava

Drifter and I stood still as the reality of our situation dawned on us. Five Vex and five Xekis stood before us, all armed with blades and laser guns.

They had somehow found us.

“Don’t move,” the biggest of the Xekis said. From his clothing, it was clear he was some sort of head chief among the other Xekis. He wore a headdress of leaves, and golden bangles up and down his arms. His armor was similarly ornamental, less practical than the armor of the warriors at his sides.

Drifter shielded me with his arm and we both stepped back, only for the Vex to point their laser guns right at our faces.

How’d they find us? Didn’t Drifter say there were no signs of anyone tracking us?

I then noticed two of the Vex warriors were wearing visual devices, like something I’d expect a SEAL team to wear during a night raid. They must’ve found us through heat signatures or something more advanced.

I despised them more than ever then. They couldn’t even play fair. These warriors were useless without their ill-gotten devices. They would have never tracked down Drifter otherwise.

The Xeki leader stepped forward, his arms reached out. “Kavik, it’s been too long.”

Drifter’s lips twisted into a sneer. “An eternity wouldn’t have been long enough.”

“This is quite the surprise for me. You were supposed to die, considering the long-term prognosis of those exiled to the desert.”

“Well, sometimes plans don’t work out.”

The Xeki leader maintained his amused expression. “You’ve gotten up to some trouble and have upset our Vex allies. Don’t you remember the terms?”

“Your terms, your rules, none of it means anything to me.”

“You were supposed to stay in the desert, forever. Never to step foot into an oasis again. Yet the Vex have come to me, complaining that one of my own has been meddling in their affairs.”

Drifter sneered. “I’m not one of your own, so the lot of you can go fuck off.”

“You represent your tribe poorly. Even as an outcast, we expect certain standards from you. The Vex say that you’ve stolen a female that belongs to them and killed one of their esteemed lords.”

“He can’t have been that esteemed. I killed him with a small throwing knife.”

“Your talking back didn’t amuse me years ago, and it doesn’t amuse me now. It seems I wasn’t harsh enough in my punishment of you, so we’re going to bring you to our court for an updated judgment.”

Drifter scoffed. “What’s the punishment this time? Further exile?”

The Xeki leader looked from Drifter to me, a disgusting smirk on his face. “I have plans for the both of you—especially the female—which will become apparent soon enough.”

Drifter was amazingly quick with his next move, throwing a knife into the chest of this Xeki leader, then two more at the laser guns pointed at us.

The Vex shot him with the remaining laser guns, sending him tumbling to the sands. I screamed, falling to my knees to turn him over and see if he was still breathing.

I saw no blood, but he was completely limp.
