Cress

My stomach drops. I clench my eyes shut. There’s no way I’m going to survive this. Those gliders can’t lift us! They’re nothing more than branches and leather! I don’t even realize I’m screaming until my throat starts to burn. I can’t hear Kor laughing over the howl of the wind, but I can feel it rumbling through his chest.

I open my eyes just long enough to watch the ground rise up to meet us. I’m going to be sick. I’m going to pass out. I’m not sure in what order.

Kor’s thumb finds a small switch. I hear what sounds like flint striking stone followed by the distinct crackle of a spark. Out of nowhere, the glider lifts straight up. It’s the most exhilarating feeling. The ground shrinks away. The Snowy Mountains are at eye level, the sun glinting on the snow.

My screams quickly shift into giggles.

“This is amazing!” I gush.

“Oh, good. You’re done damaging my ears,” Kor replies.

“Sorry!” Does it still count as an apology if I can’t stop laughing? The glider slowly starts to lose altitude once more. Before we get too close to the ground, Kor flips the switch and we fly back up again.

“Will the stone carry us indefinitely?” I ask.

“Yes,” he replies. If his mouth weren’t so close to my ear, I wouldn’t be able to hear him. “So long as we’re able to generate a spark, the stone will provide the energy we need to stay aloft.”

“Has anyone ever crashed?” I regret the question as soon as it leaves my mouth.

“Of course,” he says. “But that has more to do with Drokan being poor gliders.”

My heart thuds in my chest.

“What makes Drokan bad pilots, exactly?” Again, I regret the words as soon as I say them.

“We tire of gliding in straight lines quickly. So, we often resort to doing things like this.” He tips forward, sending the nose of the glider down. We plummet through the air. He tips his body weight, causing us to spiral.

This is it. This is how I die. Good thing I don’t have any family left. They’d never believe whoever had the displeasure of explaining my passing to them.

When Kor straightens us out, we’re upside down. My stomach faces the sky. The wings of the glider hover over the ground.

“Kor!” I howl.

He flips us over.

“Are you all right?” He laughs as he sends the glider back to a safer level.

“How long until we reach The Precursor?” I ask.

“Not long, I suppose,” he replies.

“Enjoy this time. When we land, I’m going to strangle you.”

Kor lets out a booming laugh.

“That would’ve been a good threat if I believed your small hands could wrap all the way around my neck,” he grins.

“I never said I’d use my hands.”

“That sounds more like a good time than a threat.” His lips brush against my ear when he speaks. A shiver races up and down my body. Warmth pools in my belly. It’s not fair how easily he turns me on, especially when I’m not pleased with him.
