CHAPTER 13

SHOOTING ENGLAND

TO THE EUROS

For Trent, 2016–17 was exactly the breakthrough season that he had been hoping for, both for club and country. Thanks to the move from central midfield to right-back, he was now a regular starter for the England Under-19s. The coach, Keith Downing, loved his attacking style and encouraged him to get forward at every opportunity. It was something that their opponents wouldn’t be expecting.

‘You’ll need to do a bit of defending too, though!’ Downing added with a smile.

Trent didn’t mind that; he loved both sides of the right-back role. But attacking was what he did best, and for the England Under-19s, he took full advantage of his extra freedom.

GOAL! GOAL! Trent started by scoring two in a friendly against Croatia – a long-range strike and then a penalty kick.

From there, his fine form continued during England’s qualifiers for Euro 2017:

GOAL! GOAL! Trent claimed both of his team’s goals against Wales, even if the first did take a deflection.

‘No way is that an own goal,’ he argued with Tom Davies afterwards. ‘My shot was going in anyway!’

GOAL! He scored another from the spot against Greece.

ASSIST! He dribbled his way past three Norway defenders, before pulling a perfect ball back for Mason Mount to tap in.

‘Yes, Trent!’ Mason cheered, giving his teammate a hug.

But England’s exciting right-back saved his best performance for their next game against Spain. In the ninth minute, Trent got the ball and raced forward down the wing. Marc Cucurella, Spain’s left- back, was expecting him to cross it, but instead, he cleverly cut inside and into the penalty area. On his weaker foot, Trent faked as if he was aiming for the far corner, but then squeezed his shot in at the near post instead. 1–0!

Gooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllll lllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

‘Yesssss!’ Trent roared punching the air with both fists. Everything about the goal had been brilliant: the speed, the skill, the shot, but especially the quick thinking. He had made the Spanish defence look like fools!

And in the second half, he did it again. When the left winger, Fran García, stopped him from dribbling down the line, Trent just took a different route instead. In a flash, he burst infield, past García and into the box, where Cucurella flew in to make a reckless foul. Penalty to England!

Trent picked himself up and took the spot-kick himself. After a few short steps, he blasted the ball into the net, sending the keeper the wrong way. 2–0!

Gooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another game, another two goals for England’s remarkable right-back. Trent was simply unstoppable, and thanks to him, they were off to Euro 2017!

‘And we’re going to win it!’ he declared confidently as the team celebrated their success at St George’s Park.

However, as the big tournament approached, Trent had a difficult decision to make. Should he go and play for the England Under-19s at Euro 2017 or stay at Liverpool for preseason training? Klopp wanted to work with his squad throughout the summer and get them super-fit for the new season. That included Trent. He
