Chapter 4

Doug had been able to ditch the wheelchair for a cane which he would soon be able to drop as well. It had been over a month since the incident, and he would come out in the evening and walk around the ranch, trying to walk better at each attempt. At most, he would stroll down to the gazebo and back to the house or to the stables to look in on Weston. Little by little, he was beginning to get the hang of walking with his regular confidence and stride.

That evening, just as he was about to walk over to the gazebo, Mr. Miller came to the ranch. He held his own cane in hand. His gray hair and tired posture suggested the cane was actually for someone like himself. He stood there for a moment and looked at Doug’s cane, and smiled.

“We can walk like twins tonight, son,” he chortled.

“I guess we could do that,” Doug laughed and marched off with the older man, who walked as slow as he did. They made their way towards the gazebo. When they sat on the chairs, they both took deep breaths, happy to be off their feet.

“These past weeks have been tiring, but I tell you, it has given me some perspective. I have read a lot and managed to get some things done without leaving my bedroom,” Doug said.

“Sometimes, a little pause is good for a man who is naturally active,” Mr. Miller replied, turning to look at Doug with an indulgence that made him smile.

“I was reading some city documents. They list the land ownership rights and all, and I found that a lot of the old ranches out here now belong to one group.”

“Yes, D & M, they are new to the area, but in the short time that they’ve been here, they’ve managed to take more than ten ranches from the original owners. I hear they want to build a factory down here. You must have noticed that the ranches they have bought so far are all along the same road,” Mr. Miller added.

“Yes, on the other side of the old river trail. They also bought land running farther down the river and cutting into the wilds.”

“Mine and your fathers’ were the only out-of-the-way ranches they ever tried to purchase. It is funny, but they approached your father first and made him an offer. He refused and soon found himself in violation of some city rules. If he didn’t have the strong connections he did with the former owners of the ranch, he would have lost the place.”

“What?” Doug asked in surprise.

“Your mother never told you? I figure it isn’t a big deal anymore. It would have been more of a big deal if they had actually gotten what they wanted, but your father still had those old connections and used them properly.”

“What about yours? How did the problem begin?”

“I lost a lot of my animals. It was a huge gamble I took getting that batch of sheep and poultry when most people concentrated on raising cows.
