Chapter Eleven

Colton

Oracle. Colton had heard the term before, of course. In fiction. Or from fake psychics trying to differentiate themselves from the rest. The term had a mystical sound to it.

“What exactly is an oracle?”

Sybrina’s head angled left to right and her lips moved but didn’t speak. Finally, she shrugged. “A conduit. A link to a greater power.”

“God? Gods?”

“I can’t say for certain,” she admitted. “I think it’s the force of the universe itself.”

“The universe sends you predictions?”

“No.” Her brow wrinkled, and she stepped away from him. She bounced onto the bed and curled the blanket into her hands. “I don’t read minds or see the future in the way some gifted individuals can. It’s more like I get nudges. Almost always something small. Something I can do, and I know it’ll snowball into someone’s life and change it in a large way, but I don’t get to see it.”

“I don’t get it.” He crossed his arms and leaned against the wall. A chill swept through the air and he narrowed his gaze rather than acknowledge that he hadn’t put any pants on. No way he was stopping now and giving her a chance to retreat back into her hiding hole.

Her expression grew distant. “Oracles aren’t meant to understand, either. We’re instruments of the universe. We tap into something we couldn’t decipher without help.”

“What sort of help?”

“Someone worthy of it.”

He gave her a look. He believed her, of course. There wasn’t a reason to lie about being an oracle. The problem was that he still didn’t understand what that meant, and it only grew more vague as she spoke. His brow furrowed. “Explain this like I’m a simpleton.”

She attempted a smile. “Ages ago… oracles would be kept by rulers and consulted for matters of importance. We used to advise on things like war or the harvest… which political allies to trust and which to keep at a distance. Small glimpses into the tapestry of the future but with the caveat that we only knew that knowledge in the very moment we were asked. The future is ever changing, after all.”

“It sounds like psychics but only on demand.”

“It depended on who the oracle served. Some rulers preferred to delve into the unknown. Ask about the mysteries of life or the universe, and that wisdom was granted to them. That isn’t something the average psychic can do. It’s the sort of thing that altered civilizations drastically.”

Her explanation only gave him more questions, but he tried to move forward. “Why don’t we know more about oracles, then? If you shaped the world…”

“We were the power behind thrones. While other gifted beings have found a way to coexist in modern times, oracles have to hide. Any that know of us know we are a tool to be used, and very rarely do the ones in power wish to use it for good, so to speak.” She pursed her lips for a moment. “As an oracle, I can know whether someone is trustworthy enough to access my gift.
