Chapter Thirteen

Breaker

Director Normandy exhaled a breath of subtle, dignified frustration. “I understand that you have a gut feeling here, but that doesn’t mean ignoring the facts.”

“I know.” Breaker kept his tone neutral, despite the full-blown hurricane of panic and anger churning inside. Victoria was missing. He knew she’d been taken, but the director wanted him to entertain the possibility that she orchestrated everything.

That was Breaker’s mate that he was accusing, and it took every ounce of his control to hold back his rage at the audacity. He had to separate his emotions from the equation, though, or he’d be of no help to anyone.

“Nothing in Ms. Amsel’s behavior, nor in the testimony of her peers indicates that she’s involved past what some third-party wants us to believe. The shop owner, Pearl, felt certain that Victoria was not her attacker, besides.”

“The shop owner was put to sleep with a spell pouch. Such a thing would be within Ms. Amsel’s ability.”

“Perhaps. But why would she bother? If her goal was to dodge the officer with her, she didn’t need to involve someone she knew. It’s too risky to have been some clever ploy.”

The director scoffed. “No one is perfect. Hubris is usually the downfall of criminals.”

“The other pieces of the case don’t line up in a way to indicate Ms. Amsel’s guilt,” Breaker insisted.

“Astral projection. Psychokinesis. Manipulation of perception—essentially, invisibility,” The director listed. “These are achievable by witches who practice both light and shadow magic.”

“She isn’t that powerful,” Breaker insisted.

“You aren’t qualified to make that statement.”

“We talked about her limits. She showed me what she can do. She can light a candle and nudge small objects. That’s a far cry from anything like astral projections.”

The director’s eyes narrowed. “She used magic on you?”

“Not on me. In my presence for the sake of sharing information and transformation.” He gestured to his compiled report of the case so far, which sat on the desk between them. “Perhaps she could have lied to me, but I doubt it. When we were trained on lie detection, I got all high marks. If that’s not enough, check the testimony from the coven. Nothing about her having an unusual or even impressive level of power.”

The director took in a deep breath and spun his chair in a slight angle, breaking his eye contact with Breaker. “Your consultant request was approved but on the stipulation that any field work be limited. She can come into the office. You can take her to the previous crime scenes. You will not take her to any new locations.”

“The shop?”

“You can take her there.” The director scratched at his brow. “Her information should be at your desk, waiting for you. I had it arranged right before we got the call about Ms. Amsel.”

“Then I’ll be going.”

“One moment.” The director’s head tilted. “You have your gut feelings and I have mine. Mine tells me there’s more going on here than is indicated by your reports.”

“Of course not.”

“You mean ‘of course’ you won’t tell me.” A quiet moment passed where Breaker wondered if the statement was meant to encourage a confession.
