THREE DAYS LATER, BISHOP Elias of Callisto watched as the Sparrow burned its engines to slow its descent to Ganymede’s surface. He made sure to personally welcome any visitor to the infant colony, but that particular ship held a special place in his heart. He climbed out of the small electric ground cart he used to get around the colony and moved at his shuffling pace with his cane across the open landing pads to the one assigned to the Sparrow. The message that Matthew sent came to mind as his eyes traced the ship’s approach.

“The Sparrow is on its way. I know Antioch can only take in so many at this stage, but I promise the need is great. First, are the ten kids. Grace took them under her wing, so they’re kind of our responsibility now. And then there are the four prostitutes. We only meant to bring one, the mother of one of the teens, but Abigail brought half the brothel back with her. They hope to make a new life, and I know you’ll help them with that.”

The letter went on to describe in some detail their doings on the dwarf planet. Elias was impressed with the level of trouble that his favorite crew had gotten into, particularly Grace. Matthew concluded with a short warning and a request.

“Could you check on Yvonne and Davey. They’ve both been through a lot lately and could use a kind voice. Or maybe just an ear. I can’t thank you enough, Elias. Sometimes I feel as if I shove all my problems in your direction. You’re doing the real work by helping people build new lives.”

Elias was happy to take in the poor souls that Matthew sent his way, so long as they weren’t too numerous. There seemed to be a steady trickle every few months. Fourteen would certainly be a new record, but he couldn’t deny that the need was real.

“Father, provide me with the means and grace to show these people the love of Christ,” he prayed as the Sparrow settled down onto the field. He leaned against his cane, content to wait. Ten minutes later, the ramp lowered and a side door opened. The young man, Davey, poked his head out and walked slowly down the ramp. He waved a timid greeting, which Elias joyfully returned. He gestured him over. “My son! It is good to see you safe.” A range of emotions crossed Davey’s face. Anger. Fear. Doubt. Confusion. No doubt, his sister’s absence was the source of this complex array of feelings. Elias knew he would have to tread carefully, for a glib word could do great harm.

“I guess you’ve heard from Matthew?” Davey finally asked.

Elias nodded. “And I pray daily for your sister’s safe return.”

Davey didn’t seem to be so sure about that. Elias knew him well enough from the time he had spent visiting the boy in the hospital. Between the evil complications arising from his heritage, and the years on the street and in slavery, he had a difficult relationship with the universe at large.
