Conversation Circle

After playtime all of the students in Ms. Fong’s class sat around in a circle. This is a special time for the class to talk about things that are important to the children in the class. Sometimes they would talk about fun things like planning a party and sometimes it would be about something serious like kids being mean to each other. Ms. Fong would sit in the middle of the circle and she would start the conversation.

Ms.Fong said that today we are going to talk about what being different means. Sometimes being different can be fun, sometimes being different can be scary, and sometimes being different is really not different but it is just different to you.

I would like to share with the class that I am different. The kids in the class all looked at each other and said what is different about Ms. Fong she is very nice. Since this was a very polite class they did not say those things to Ms. Fong because they did not want to be rude and hurt her feelings.

In a very quiet voice, Ms. Fong said many people think that I am Chinese because of my last name. Ms. Fong said that my full name is Seng Fong and I am a Lao Iu Mien and my family came here from Laos after the Vietnam war. When I first came to this country I could not speak English and I felt very different. I was scared, lonely and afraid. When I went to school kids would sometimes be mean to me because I was different. It took me a long time to understand that it was okay to be different. So my being different was a scary experience for me and it was not fun.
