It is needless to say, that if the aforementioned networks are located within the premises of a city, then they are part of the smart city infrastructure. Smart energy may provide a diverse portfolio of energy sources for the smart city residents who can make optimal decisions for their needs. For instance, city residents participating in a price-directed energy market may optimize the cost of heating their house by combining purchases of gas and electricity, thus, creating an optimal mixed energy portfolio.
Energy storages within the cities are considered essential for implementing smart energy systems. It should be noted that storage devices may belong to residents, like batteries, or maybe part of the public infrastructureâe.g., fuel storage containers located in the port of a city.
One of the main challenges in smart energy is the satisfaction of the demand of people of different statuses and lifestyles in close geographic proximity. For instance, residents in wealthy areas may have higher demand and a high variety of ways for energy utilization. To make it clearer, for instance, luxurious areas may have gas pipes for supply, while they may have their own electricity generators [17]. On the other hand, poor areas may utilize only electricity, while their demand is low. Also, wealthy residents may afford and adopt a high number of technological advancementsâe.g., smart home technologies-, while poor residents are less prone to use new technologies (because of the purchasing cost) [18]. Therefore, those differences make the city regions exhibit differences and the overall city heterogeneous concerning energy consumption.
Driven by those differences, it can be stated that the city can be partitioned into sectors based on the average consumption profile. Thus, it can be said without loss of generality that a smart city may be portioned into various consumption sectors [19], with each sector exhibiting a consumption profile that characterizes the wealth and lifestyle of the residents in that sector [20].
Overall, energy consumption is an essential issue in the normal operation of the cities. Consequently, the leverage of cities to smart cities will impose several challenges to smart energy systems concerning residentsâ consumption. However, smart cities have a powerful ally: the utilization of information. Therefore, challenges and constraints that are inherent in the physical energy networks can be overcome by the intelligent use of information. The word âintelligent useâ is strongly associated with the use of artificial intelligence tools [21].
