Chapter Four

I awoke with a smile, tears of relief welling in my eyes as the heat of the three bodies next to me told me that I was back in my room.

And I hadn’t visited Xiatyan in the night.

The bond had finally strengthened enough to keep him away again.

The Dragons had no reason to lock me away.

My stomach twisted with guilt at the thought of him being left alone as he was, but even that couldn’t quite dampen my relief.

I could figure out a way to deal with Xiatyan later. Or maybe now that the bond was truly strengthened, I could risk seeing my Auncle Hell or Renan and talking to them. Surely they could be reasoned with.

Either way, I was free for now, and that was all I could ask for.

I sat up to see that the others were dead to the world, and I couldn’t blame them. The night before had been... Well, it would have been enough to tire anyone out, I figured.

But I was up and more awake than I’d felt in weeks. I didn’t know if that was the stress of everything with Xiatyan lifting, or if I’d just finally slept properly for the first time in weeks, but I would take it.

I carefully extracted myself from my bed, careful not to wake the others. If I weren’t so alert, I would be tempted to snuggle back down with them and just snooze for a bit, but I was too keyed up for that.

No, sitting still wasn’t an option for me.

Despite my best efforts to keep quiet, James stirred, propping himself up with a frown.

“You’re up early,” he said, his voice low enough not to wake the others.

I shrugged. “Anxiety tires me out, and for the first time in a long time, I’m not anxious.”

He smiled. “I take it that means that you didn’t see Xiatyan?”

I smiled back, though my smile widened into a grin. “No, I didn’t.” My smile then faded. “But what about you? Are you all right after last night? I know you were nervous.”

He extracted himself from the bed at that, and I had a hard time not staring as he made his way over and kissed me gently.

“I’m more than fine,” he assured me.

“Are you sure?” I asked, leaning further into his warmth.

“I’m sure. Really, Skye, last night was... It was amazing. I definitely needed that time to myself to figure things out, but I’m glad to be here with you now.”

I leaned forward to kiss him again, more than a little annoyed that the other two were still asleep and taking up all the bed space.

James smiled as he pulled away, and I wondered if he was thinking the same thing. “How about we go and get everyone breakfast? Before either of us get too impatient and try to wake the others from their sleep.”

I smiled. “Breakfast sounds great.”

We both quickly got dressed, somehow managing not to stir the other two, before making our way downstairs and out towards one of the cafes.
