Graceâs head was full of words and impressions. So much to see and remember.
Her heart was full of wonder and possibility.
Sheâd tricked him into thinking she was crying in order to have him hold her and then sheâd shamelessly told him she was right where she wanted to be. She was leading him to think she cared for him in more than a your-my-brotherâs-friend way.
It wasnât possible. Sheâd only known him a few days. It wasnât long enough. But he wasnât like a stranger. Thanks to Samâs letters, she felt like sheâd known him a long time. Maybe forever. That was impossible and yet still true. It was a good thing she didnât have to explain her thoughts to anyone because she couldnât find the words. Maybe there werenât words created for the way she felt.
They walked back to the wagon where Adam took out the picnic basket. She picked up the quilt and they hiked through the trees up the hill to a viewpoint that allowed them a spectacular view.
The Rockies shone in the light. Bits of clouds floated over them like icy breath. Foothills rolled onward from where they stood until the hills became mountains. Green, lush valleys dotted the scene. Trees in variegated tones of green draped hills and filled dale.
As she stared, Adam spread the quilt and set the basket down.
She tore her gaze from the view and sat beside him. âI could never get enough of this view.â
âI understand. Iâve been here seven years and never get tired of it though I admit I am sometimes too busy to take time to appreciate it.â
He prayed over the food and they dug in. Sandwiches made from sliced venison with some kind of pungent mustard sauce were like nothing sheâd ever tasted before. She said that to Adam.
âItâs something Scotty makes. He refuses to tell anyone how he does it.â
They ate in silence for a few minutes but she had so much she wanted to know. With a start, she realized she wanted to know about Adam even more than she wanted to learn about the ranch and life in the west.
âWhat part of Circle A do you like the best?â she asked.
âI like the cows, especially seeing the young calves chasing each other and kicking up their heels. I like riding and working with the horses.â He lowered his sandwich to stare at her. âIâve never thought about what I like best but itâs being part of a family.â His voice deepened as if he struggled with emotions. âAfter we were kicked off our farm, it felt like we belonged nowhere. But John and Maude welcomed us and somehow turned a bunch of angry, defiant boys into a family.â
Grace reached over and squeezed his hand. âThatâs a lovely tribute to them.â
âTheyâre a wonderful couple. And Scottyâs not such a bad sort despite his tough talk.â
She chuckled. âHeâs a softy. I can see that.â
âTell me about your family. The Munroes.â
She shifted her thoughts back to life before she arrived at the ranch.
